North Coast Speed Blur Barrel
LOTD_July_2_2012_gallery20120629053811PM.jpg
"That's Asher Pacey, from the North Coast, I've know him for two or three years now and he's a dude man. He's awesome. He surfs pretty amazing and he's really good to work with. I met him out at my home point at Sawtell when it was the best I'd ever seen it. I just introduced myself to him and started shooting and since then we've worked a lot together. It was almost too big for that spot on this day but it was just holding it. A perfect day really – good waves good times. How big is it? Ha, it's about as big as it looks in the photo, that's about as accurate as a description I can give you. I just love speed blurs. I'd shoot everything speed blur if I could. I wouldn't really but they are fun. They make average things look better, even airs, if you do it right."

Josh Kerr and The First Half Hour
LOTD_July_1_2012_gallery20120703050935PM.jpg
"This is Josh Kerr at Bells just before one of the days of competition. I shot this from just under the cliff while trying to keep myself dry just minutes after the sunrise, super early morning. The first half hour of light I think is the best to get that nice golden glow. It was pretty damn fine every single morning down there to be honest. Kerrsy was surfing good this morning, it was super fast down the line, kinda wobbly but he was surfing really really well."
Macfarlane
Left foot, right foot
LOTD_July_3_2012_gallery20120703050935PM.jpg
"I'd appreciate it if you didn't say where this is. It's a couple of hundred metres down from where I shot that one of Asher on a different morning, it's a little bit smaller but super clean and drainy looking. I've shot it a few times but surfed it a few times as well and it's a really fun peaky wave. It's kind of a mission to get to, you have to cross a creek and walk for a while. I took this shot while I was waiting for a surfer to get arrive on a ski. There's four wheel drive access to the beach, so people drive along the sand as you can see there but that wasn't my car though. Nah, got there the old fashioned way – left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot, left foot …"Line-up Of The Day this week has been put together by photographer Duncan Macfarlane. Duncs is a 22-year-old Sawtell native with a penchant for stringy beards, and slow shutter speeds. Check out more of his stuff at his website here:  www.duncanmacfarlane.com.au

Josh Kerr's Backdoor Whooosh.
LOTD_July_5_2012_gallery220120704055425PM.jpg
"This wave was wild. Josh, I swear to God, almost made this thing. He travels right through it to the end, and I am all like, "Well he sure ain't gonna be making that…" then he goes WHOOOOOSH so fast and almost pops out at the end. And then he gets smoked. It was a big thick nasty thing. In fact this was just minutes after Reef McIntosh's wave of the winter in Hawaii." - Duncan Macfarlane

Wade Goodall, back and barrelled.
LOTD_June_30_2012_gallery20120705060038PM.jpg
"That's Wade Goodall shooting with Runamuk Visuals for Creative Destruction on a nice Autumn day. It's not an early morning shot… or a speed blur, so it's super strange for me. Questionable if I even shot it. I've known Wade for a little while now. He's had a rough coupla years with injuries but he's coming good again. I did a trip with him the other day and he's doing some really crazy airs. He’s back! I'm about to go on a trip with him now and we’re both bringing banjos. The first time I got in contact with Runamuk I was drunk and on Facebook. I sent him a bunch of my images and I think he liked them and then he asked me to come on a trip with him and Wade. I'd done a few projects but this one got me rolling. I don't hit people up on Facebook anymore, it was a bit of fake courage but I'm very grateful for Runamuk, he helped me get my foot in the door and get on a few trips."

Backlit Burleigh
LOTD_July_7_2012_gallery20120706061645PM.jpg
“That's Burleigh, and I can't remember when it was, is that important? It's been so good up here all year, it's been so consistent that it’s hard to remember exactly when it was, Actually, I’m pretty sure it was around when MP passed, in the swell that followed his passing. That morning it seemed just like a normal sort of surf vibe, excitement that it was pumping and that it was good to have waves again more than anything. People were obviously talking about MP and it was and is a huge deal but to be really honest I wasn't in the surf enough to pick up on the vibe in the water. It's shot mid morning, when the light's terrible and that's why it's black and white, ’cause it’s backlit. I dunno who the guy is. He's looking at the wave though and he's got headphones in, just going for a morning walk.”

The 20-minute gamble
LOTD_July_8_2012_gallery20120706061645PM.jpg
“The file on that one’s called 1000mm ’cause I did a metre wide a print of it for an exhibition. Why I like this one? Because I haven’t really shot waves that big, from a chopper in that light before, and that as a combination is really exciting. It was during that huge east swell that was up here a little a while ago that peaked at five metres plus or something. It was taken in the last fifteen minutes light behind Straddie Bombie way out the back. I was up there specifically to shoot ocean-scapes, and was only up there for just 20 minutes, the last 20 minutes of light hoping to get a set and luckily one came through. You know how sets only break every twenty minutes or so when it's really big? I could have easily gone out there and not got one so it was a bit of a gamble.”
Trent Mitchell
The pits, D-bah.
LOTD_July_9_2012_gallery20120706061646PM.jpg
“This was around March and it was the first time there were waves in quite a while from memory – super fun and uncrowded. I'm down towards the Lover’s end, and guys were getting some super fun pits. I probably would have swum this day normally but I had a torn ACL, so the muscle between the top part of the knee and the bottom part had snapped clean… cartilage damage and bruised bones. It happened in early January coming off a skatey. I was doing a downhill and ran to jump off in barefeet, the knee went one way and the foot went the other way, just one of those things. So that has kept me out of the water and I’m almost back. So I would have shot this on crutches with my knee brace on. That’s in the past now. I was just laughing thinking about it, I’m so glad it’s over.”

I'd shot with a chopper before so I called them in the morning, and the pilot said just come and meet him half an hour before I wanted to go up He loves shooting when I go up because it's a bit more fun flying over the ocean instead of all the building photography he normally does I think. The shoot happened quick, I didn't realise I had good shots until I got home. You ever been in a chopper for twenty minutes? So fast, it's like it didn't even happen. We went straight out to the bombie, 'cause we didn't have long. I paid for 20 minutes 'cause I'm a tight arse, thought I'd go up in the best light of the day and take the risk to see if it was worth doing anything… and it was."

Seeking Sanity.

"That's my girlfriend on the left, I made her go and stand there (laughs). We went for a camping weekend away with a mate and it just so happened that the surf was pumping, my girlfriend surfs so she was watching the waves anyway. It was too big for her to surf, but the Gold Coast can get a bit boring every now and then so you just get away sometimes to keep your sanity. This was a couple of weekends ago and I was just testing a Nikon D800E. East swell, four-to-six foot offshore, everywhere was good from what I hear. Laurie Towner paddled out and got a couple of good ones. Actually, (Mick) Fanning messaged me while I was standing there, asking if I wanted to come shoot North Straddie. I was too far away, but yeah, the waves must have been good everywhere that day."

Flat Bottomed Curls
LOTD_July_12_2012_gallery20120711033556PM.jpg
"This one was in Surfing World but this is the entire photo, in the mag it was cropped onto a single vertical page I think it's best run like this 'cause the energy moving across the image is right to left, as soon as you cut that image with the vertical crop it's not as strong, it loses it's flow. The energy is moving into nothing really and some people may see that as exactly what I just said. Nothing. But that nothing is something because it balances all the energy moving across.Kirra has its glory days every year, they're just different from the other years, I don't think they're any better or worse, just different. It's always kinda good, still better than most of the beachbreaks around Sydney. No-one was out this day and that's an example of what I was trying to say before (Line-up of The Day: The Art of Surfing Kirra), it looked too quick but down at North Kirra there was a slow section in the bank where I saw five or six waves in a row barrel perfectly, they weren't long but they were nice flat bottomed hollow pits, and that's the whole reason why you go up there, you look at the stretch and work out where all the banks are."Line-up of The Day this week has been provided by award winning photographer Trent Mitchell. Bred on the beaches of Mona Vale, he now resides on the Gold Coast and is fast becoming one of Australia’s finest lensman, in surfing and out. The Art of Surfing Kirra
LOTD_July_13_2012_gallery20120711033556PM.jpg
"I like that he's facing the eagle hey, not the surf. There were a couple of people out then but not many, it was pretty early. The majority were at Snapper up the bank so there weren't too many people around. That's the best spot to check Kirra and the entire bank out, you can't really make out Snapper but you can check if Greemount has a good bank and see all the way to Kirra and North Kirra, you can see all the little bends in the bank and the sections and what's makeable or not makeable, where as if you're out there it might take you a good hour to work out where the sand is, but if you go up there and analyse it for 20 minutes you can work it all out. The art of surfing that place is knowing where the best sand is on that inside strip and working around that sand with the tide and stuff. It's pretty simple, some days it'll be good for an hour and that's it, and some days it'll be good for hours on end. You can work that all out from just watching it."Line-up of The Day this week has been provided by award winning photographer Trent Mitchell. "This is an empty shot from a reef up on the QLD border, gets pretty crowded but this was borderline to big with only Parko and Asha in the water, this one almost washed through, but as you can see, it back off, doubled up and unleashed."Thick Water is an entry into Coastalwatch's Roam Free Photo Competition.
