HURRICANE FORCE WIND WARNING FOR NORTH EASTERN AREA
SITUATION
At 0000 UTC Severe Tropical Cyclone Niran was centred within 10 nautical miles
of
latitude fifteen decimal one south (15.1S)
longitude one hundred and forty eight decimal six east (148.6E)
Recent movement : east southeast at 4 knots
Maximum winds : 70 knots
Central pressure: 968 hPa
AREA AFFECTED
Within 150 nautical miles in NE quadrant
and within 60 nautical miles in SE quadrant
and within 60 nautical miles in SW quadrant
and within 90 nautical miles in NW quadrant.
FORECAST
Maximum winds to 70 knots near the centre increasing to 100 knots by 0000 UTC
05 March.
Winds above 64 knots within 25 nautical miles of centre with high to very high
seas.
Winds above 48 knots within 50 nautical miles in NE quadrant
and within 30 nautical miles in SE quadrant
and within 30 nautical miles in SW quadrant
and within 40 nautical miles in NW quadrant with very rough to high seas and
moderate to heavy swell.
Winds above 34 knots within 150 nautical miles in NE quadrant
and within 60 nautical miles in SE quadrant

Headline:
Cyclone warning cancelled for north Queensland. Severe Tropical Cyclone Niran
reaches category 3 intensity while edging away from the mainland.
Areas Affected:
Warning zone: None.
Watch zone: None.
Cancelled zone: Cape Flattery to Innisfail.
Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Niran at 7:00 am AEST:
Intensity: Category 3, sustained winds near the centre of 120 kilometres per
hour with wind gusts to 165 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 30 kilometres of 15.1 degrees South 148.4 degrees East,
estimated to be 215 kilometres northwest of Willis Is and 345 kilometres
northeast of Cairns.
Movement: slow moving.
Severe Tropical Cyclone Niran is moving away from the north Queensland coast
with the risk of gales along the exposed coast now very low. The tropical
cyclone will adopt a faster east southeast track during today and accelerate
further away from the coast while strengthening. It is likely to reach peak
intensity over the Coral Sea during Friday, then gradually weaken as it moves
further southeastwards.
Hazards:
GALES are no longer expected about exposed coastal and island communities
between Cape Flattery and Innisfail.

TROPICAL CYCLONE INFORMATION BULLETIN
Issued at 10:48 am EST on Thursday 4 March 2021
At 10 am AEST Thursday, Severe Tropical Cyclone Niran (Category 3) with central
pressure 968 hPa was located over the Coral Sea near latitude 15.1 south
longitude 148.6 east, which is about 200 km northwest of Willis Is and 365 km
northeast of Cairns.
Niran is forecast to rapidly intensify as it adopts an east-southeast track
away from the Queensland coast during today. The system is expected to continue
moving away from the Queensland coast over the next few days before approaching
New Caledonia over the weekend.
No direct hazards are expected about Queensland coastal or island communities.
The next Information Bulletin will be issued by 5 pm AEST today.

RIVER LEVELS EASING AT EURAMO AND MURRAY FLATS
No significant rainfall has been recorded across the Tully and Murray River
catchments in the 24 hours to 9am Thursday.
Showers and thunderstorms are possible over the next few days.
Tully River:
River levels continue to ease along the Tully River.
The Tully River at Euramo is currently at 4.73 metres (below minor) and
falling. The Tully River at Euramo will remain below the minor flood level
(6.00 m) during Thursday.
Murray River:
River levels continue to ease along the Murray River.
The Murray River at Murray Flats is currently at 6.70 metres (below minor) and
falling. The Murray River at Murray Flats will remain below the minor flood
level (7.00 m) during Thursday.

No significant rainfall has been observed in the catchment area in the 24 hours
to 9am Thursday.
Showers and thunderstorms are possible over the next few days.
Herbert River to Nash's Crossing:
River levels continue to slowly ease along the upper Herbert River to Nash's
Crossing.
No current readings are available for the Herbert River at Gleneagle (manual
gauge), but based on the nearby automatic gauge it is likely that the Herbert
River at Gleneagle remains near the minor flood level and falling. The Herbert
River at Gleneagle will fall below the minor flood level (4.50 m) Thursday
morning.

RIVER LEVELS EASED BELOW THE CAUSEWAY AT DIAMANTINA LAKES AND MONKIRA
No significant rainfall has been recorded over the last week, and no
significant rainfall is forecast over the next few days.
Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes:
River levels continue to slowly ease along the Diamantina River to Diamantina
Lakes. On Thursday morning the river level was approximately 0.11 metres below
the level of the Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway.
Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes:
River levels downstream at Monkira are expected to be near or below the
Diamantina Development Road Causeway.

Flood Warning Number: 3
Minor flooding is no longer expected on the Georgina River at Marion Downs.
No significant rain is forecast for the next few days for the catchment area
for the next few days.
Georgina River to Marion Downs:
River levels along the Georgina River upstream of Marion Downs continue to
ease.
The Georgina River at Marion Downs was at 1.95 metres at 9:00 am Monday and
rising slowly. The Georgina River at Marion Downs is expected to peak blow the
minor flood level (3.00 m) and remain below the minor flood level during the
next few days.
