Short-Term Analysis (through Sunday, 26 October)

NE windswell peaks Saturday: A light to moderate NNE flow currently in place off the NSW coast will continue to build in strength throughout Friday, ramping up in response to a deepening low pressure trough and associated surface low moving across Victoria and western NSW during the day. The deepening low invigorates a stronger NNE flow in the order of 20-30 knots offshore, producing a stronger push in short period NE windswell, mostly in the 2 to 3ft+ range across open beaches on Saturday, with scope for larger 4ft sets at standout breaks in the early morning. Accompanying, fresh northerly winds will lend the focus to semi-sheltered northern corners for the best options throughout the day.

Transition in swell-trains sets in on Sunday: The tail end of the NE swell is still likely to be hanging in around the 2ft+ mark on Sunday morning, albeit under freshening southerly winds following in the wake of the aforementioned low and associated cold front crossing the coast. That should see NE swell rapidly diminishing as it’s superseded by steep rising southerly windswell picking up throughout the afternoon.
