    Summary
We’re now entering the early stages of a new swell-event across the region; linked to a surface trough and embedded low now developing off the northern NSW coast. In conjunction with a high pressure ridge building in from the south, we’re now seeing a close range SE/ESE fetch elongating across the southern Tasman Sea. Initially that translates into a rising, short-period ESE windswell; picking up steeply overnight and conservatively peaking at very junky 4 to 6ft+ levels on Wednesday morning. If you don’t mind the cold temps, strong winds and rain, the more north-facing breaks may well be offering up good conditions under strong, 20 to 30kt southerly winds.

Otherwise it’s looking like a write-off across the majority of open coasts – at least until winds drop off into Thursday morning. A rapid weakening of the low and ridge should see the ESE fetch quickly dissipating throughout Wednesday; translating into a rapid decline in Easterly swell on Thursday – so what’s looking like a still substantial, short period easterly swell in the 4ft range is likely to drop off fairly quickly on Thursday afternoon. This should coincide with moderate ESE winds – still hardly ideal – but potentially improving as winds swing to the NE during Thursday afternoon.
