HIGHLIGHTS: A short term building trend in WSW groundswell is backed up by larger SW groundswell from Wednesday to Friday, lending the focus to the Surf Coast for most of the working week.

    Short-Term Analysis

Wednesday’s steady increase in windblown SW groundswell leads in a notable improvement into the end of the week, featuring a string of good to great days across the Surf Coast.  The current episode follows in the wake of a deep mid-latitude low that migrated across the south-eastern Indian Ocean and then swiftly below the mainland over the last couple of days; supporting a broad westerly fetch exhibiting core winds of 40 to 50kt as it moved through our southwest swell window on Tuesday. The bulk of a large, longer-period SW groundswell arising from this source moves in across the state throughout Wednesday and Thursday; big enough to max-out the exposed beaches on both days, while opening up still solid, albeit wind-affected 4 to 6ft conditions across the Surf Coast on Wednesday afternoon.

The good news is conditions should gradually clean up across the region on Thursday morning. Easing southerly winds give way to light and variable conditions as a large high pressure system moves overhead during the day, allowing for a steady improvement in surface quality as the day progresses. That leads in another great day across the Surf Coast on Friday as winds resume out of the WNW, greeting smaller, but still good sized 3 to 4ft sets across the premier reefs throughout the day. It will, however, be well worth making the most of conditions both on Thursday and Friday, with onshore winds again looming across the state throughout the weekend. This follows the passage of a weak cold front,  moving south to north across Bass Strait on Friday  and leading in a new high pressure ridge from the west this weekend. With the associated high forecast to remain slow moving over the Great Australian Bight all weekend, it probably won’t be until Monday 8th June that winds finally fall away and turn light WNW as the high finally migrates eastward over Victoria.
