How good is Al Knost's finless surfing in his La Casa residency video with his band Tomorrow's Tulips? So good. Whether it's your bag or not, there is no denying Knost's influence on logging and mid-length surfing in the last decade. So, we asked him if he could tell us who his top five style icons in surfing have been.
Al Knost's Five Essential Style Icons In Surfing
1. David Nuuhiwa. His surfing in Free and Easy riding a longboard is still the best ever, and his surfing in Sunshine Sea just a few years later is just amazing, for some reason his movements in that movie resonate much more than anyone else.
2. Craig Anderson. Never have I had such an appreciation for modern day surfing, every moment is so "Lopez" it's insane, even when he's spinning in the air or dropping into a sketchy one.
3. Ozzie Wright. Completely changed the course of surfing and opened many minds and doors for generations to come. He embellished freedom during surfing's introduction to the internet, and social media - new platforms where ridicule and faceless insecure opinions could have stunted surfing's personal expression forever. Ozzie is a "fuck you" and he should always be hugged and kissed for that by surfers everywhere.
4. Donovan Frankenreiter. His section in Hit and Run still makes me wanna surf, and makes me wish I could ride a thruster, styles for miles.
5. Gerry Lopez. Although his talent, fearlessness and line is light years from anything I could ever dream of doing in surfing, it's his poise and relationship with the ocean that arouses a level of excitement in me that is both admirable poetically as well as sexually.
