13 Things That Surfing Made Happen On The Internet This Week
By Mike Jennings

1. Tom Curren's J-Bay 10

The most viral moment of the week is no doubt Tom Curren’s 10 point ride at J-Bay on Saturday night. Curren was part of a so-called Heritage Heat vs Occy, staged between the quarters and the semis of the J-Bay Open. With classic J-Bay conditions, and a bit of hype, a lot of eyes were on the heat, and Curren certainly delivered. It.Was. Legendary.

2. Mick Fanning Won The J-Bay Open

So much talk about Curren, what about the main event? Mick Fanning, and Parko duked it out in the final after a truly epic day of competitive surfing which will go down in history of one of the best professional surfing has ever seen. It's Mick’s second win of the season, and after a poor resulty for Gabby (if quarters is consiedered a poor result by his standards) and another consistent high result for Parko, the World Title Race is as wide as ever. What a year, man, what a year.

3. Wilko Was Awesome At J-Bay Too

Competing for the top story out of J-Bay with Curren, Mick, a pod of surfing dolphins, and the flawless conditions of J-Bay itself, was Wilko…. Yep. Wilko.  Parko was fantastic (his ten in the semi was golden-Joel Parkinson), Owen made a rad comeback to form, but the Copacobana goofy-foot put on the performance of his career and possibly the best backhand performance in an event since Occy in the Skins at Bells all that time ago. Props to ya Wilko. Check the turn at the 24 second mark. Yowsers!

4. Samsung ASP Commercial Is The Best Surfing Commercial Ever

While we’re all up in ASP world, did you see Samsung’s ASP piece? It is one of the most inspiring surf clips we’ve ever seen, and is far and away the best piece of marketing the new ASP has been a part of since, possibly ever, made all the more beautiful with a cover of David Bowie's Absolute Beginners by singer Angela McCluskey. People will line up to tear this thing down, and the new ASP with it, and that’s fine. But if we wall want surfing to succeed, and accept that corporate involvement is the key to that, and then that results in an ad like this? Well, isn’t that a victory for all of us in some way?

5. Noa Deane The 4:3 Series Part II

A leftovers clip of Noa Deane, who is without doubt one of the hottest freesurfers in the world at the moment, by Shane Fletcher. With a bit of an ode-to-VHS flavour, the 2 and abit minute edit nails the objective of firing you up for a surf.

6. Soli Bailey in Indonesia

Our Australian Junior Champion gets better and better and better. Five minutes of Soli Bailey barrel, carve, barrel, air of the highest standard right here.

7. Still Swell at 85 – Byron Bay Surf Festival Short Film Comp

The Byron Bay Surf festival is coming up and there are far too many rad things going on there to mention them all here. (There’s a whole website dedicated to that.) But we will mention one thing, and that’s their Short Film Comp. There are a heap of entries online already that you can watch and vote for, all under the theme – Citizens of The Sea.  It's seriously good viewing, with titles like Soul Arch or Die, how couldn't it be. Entries are still open, so if you want to get involved you damn well should right now. Below is one of the entries that’ll warm your heart, profiling 85-year-old surfer Barry Magoo McGuigan.

8. Alex Knost

This clip starts a little bit slow, then, a minute in the music changes and it turns into one of the funnest clips of the year. Different boards, fun waves, and Knost is ripping! If you hate on the fun going on in this, well, it's your loss. The turn at 1.22 ftw.

9. Chippa Wilson GoPro

Hey what’s Chippa Wilson been up to lately? Ah, just signing on as a team rider for GoPro, getting filmed with a drone and continuing to stamp himself as one of the most gifted and technically proficient aerialists in the world. Onya Chip!

10. Afends Dissolving Boundries

Tripped out psych metal your thing? Then so is Afends latest clip probably. The Byron lads is dripping with denim-headband-rattlesnake style.

11. CJ Hobgood – Psychology of The Sticker

Everyone’s favourite 2001 World Champion gets a little bit of the ASP doco treatment. This is a tad cheesey, but pulls though purely on the photos of Damien and CJ as groms. Part 2 in this series looks a winner, though.

12. Mitch Crews Joins Reef

And this is Reef’s welcome video: Crewsy ripping the bags out of perfect Indonesian rights. Too good.

13. Taylor Knox In New Zealand

A few of the turns by TK in this clip from our Kiwi pals Damaged Goods Zine are truly, vavavooom. Wouldn’t it have been great to see him at J-Bay this year. Memory lane...

Bonus... Barrel To Rugby Slam

Oh look, a guy drops in, gets barrelled and then receives a royal smackdown. This short clip from the Mentawai Islands dropped this week with the title Surf Rage: Kiwi vs Brazillian which unfortunately saw the hype around it disintegrate into the old discourse of prejudice and nationalism. Bummer. It's a funny video... can't we just leave it at that?

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone. CW out.
