Ten Things From Surfing and The Internet

Presented by the Subway Summer Surf Series

By Mike Jennings

I just spilt chips all over my desk in the Surfing World office, but I don't care. I don't care because it's Friday. It's Friday and the sun is starting to shine and there are waves around this weekend. For some of us it will be a long weekend. And by Tuesday when I return to the office I will have forgotten all about the spilt chips. How exciting is that?

1. Tyler Wright Won The Roxy Pro France, The World Title Race Turned Awesome

Isn't Tyler Wright the best?! After a quiet start to the year she won the US Open and then two events later won the Roxy Pro France in a near flawless performance. Now she's right in the Title race with Steph, Carissa and Sally. She also gave an amaizng interview with Surfing World magazine. Read 8 awesome quotes from it here. Or watch the highlights from Hossegor below. Or do both. Or neither! It's your life. You're in charge.

2. The Quikky Pro France Is Into Round 5

After quite a few lay-days the Quikky Pro finally ran again last night where they finished Round 3 and Round 4. The standout performances came from Kolohe Andino, Jordy Smith and of course Gabriel Medina (who is looking damn unstoppable) and the biggest upset came from Jadson Andre taking down Joel Parkinson. Highlight showdowns tonight will be the Round 5 clash of Mick v John John and Kelly v Taj. Get the popcorn! Or don't. You can choose to eat any snackfood you like. Popcorn is just one of an infinite number of snackfoods you could eat while watching Kelly vs Taj.

3. Girls start Portugal, Steph Can Win The World Title Right Now!

France? Pffft. Wasn't that last week? The girls are already in Portugal for the Cascais Pro and a World Title could be decided in this very event. All the while the boys are still in France. It's the equivalent of the girls watching brand new episodes of Game of Thrones while the boys are still trying to catch up on Season 2 of Breaking Bad. It's finished guys!  Tyler is ripping. Sally is ripping. Steph is ripping. Carissa, Malia, Lakey, Courtney… they all be ripping. Steph Gilmore can mathematically be World Champion by the end of this event. For that to happen the following needs to go down:

– Steph has to win the event

- Tyler Wright can not get past the quarter-finals

- Sally Fitz and Carissa Moore can not make the final

Highlights from Round 1 below:

4. Garret Parkes Is Washed

So washers, hey? But not really. Garret Parkes is freaking ripping. And what a dirty, grungey brilliant clip from our North Coast dreamboat Harry Triglone.

5. The Wave That Near Killed Loz Towner

Remember last week when Laurie Towner nearly died while stunt-surfing at Teahupoo for Point Break 2? Well here is footage of the wave that did it and interview with the legend. How chill is he? Far out, Laurie Towner is such a dude. And how about that music? Anyone else pumped up? Phwoaaar, I’m gonna go pick a fight (not really tho, fighting’s for dickheads). Clip courtesy of Tim Bonython’s ASMF, which is going to be mad-sick!

6. Code Zircon Episode 2

Code Zircon episode 2 from the crew at Afends. More great surfing from Duncan McNicol and the fellas, more punk rock, more anti-establishment vibes and a bonus cameo from Bylesy. Bylesy!

7. Volcom's True To This

Skip to 3.30 and salivate over Ryan Burch's two turns or watch from the beginning and enjoy the awesomely genius musician Kurt Vile and the delightful artist Gemma O'Brien. Is Ryan Burch the most underrated surfer/shaper in the world?

8. Hurley Tour Notes France

The most consistently entertaining web-clip series hits us from France with some candid behind the scenes times with the Hurley team.

9. Taylor Knox Is The Rad

It's getting warmer in Aus, and if my year 7 Science class at St. Bede's College Mentone back in 1999 holds true, it's probably getting colder in America, which means Winter and better waves in California for the likes of Taylor Knox. Oh, such power.

10. Great White Shark Bites Another Great White Shark

Remember that bit in the Simpsons where a shark dives out of the water and eats a gorilla? That was the best! This Great White biting another Great White in South Australia this week reminds me of that. Ahhh, nostalgia. Remember nostalgia? So good.

Bonus...

The Preatures released their debut album this week, and with it, a music video with surfing in it. Hooray for surfing meeting pop culture.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
