Ten Things From Surfing and The Internet

Presented by the Subway Summer Surf Series

By Mike Jennings

What a week hey? People are all fluey, John John and the Souths Rabbitohs won important things on the same Sunday evening, and we interviewed the best young band from Windang, ever! Also the editor of Surfing World debuted on the WQS at age 37 with a heat total of 4.25. FOUR. POINT. TWO. FIVE! But what else happened? Well, I became the Worldwide leader in ASP Women's Fantasy Surfing (true story, super-proud) and also these ten other things!

1. John John Won France & The World Lost It

Last weekend John Florence won the Quiksilver Pro France and book-ended 6 weeks of sublime World Tour performance. After a third at Teahupoo, where he was the form surfer of the event, a second at Trestles, where he was the form surfer of the event, he won the Quiksilver Pro France in the most dominant performance of any event we’ve seen in a long long time. It was brilliant viewing and had a lot of people, including our very own Sean Doherty, saying John John is the best surfer in the world at this very moment. Read Sean Doherty’s excellent piece. And here is a highlights clip of John over the past half year or so. Ahh, what a time to be alive.

2. Steph Won Portugal, Took World Title Race Lead

You probably already know by now that we're in the middle of the best Women's Title Race of the 20-teens. Probably longer. And with Steph winning Portugal, she takes the yellow jersey to the final event at Honolua Bay Nov-22, and becomes the favourite for the 2014 Crown against Tyler Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons.

Below is a video of one wave from the final that Steph won in Portugal, that turn at 18 seconds pretty much sums up why she did.

3. Rip Curl Pro Portugal Will Start This Weekend, Gabriel Medina Will Be World Champion By Next Friday (probably)

How? Well, let's b-b-break it d-d-down! Basically in the running for the 2014 crown are 6 surfers. Medina, Slater, Fanning, Parko, John John, Taj and Michel. For Taj and Michel to win Medina will probably have to quit surfing forever and Taj or Michel would have to win every event till the end of time (or Gabs places worse than 13th for both remaining events and Michel or Taj win both of them). The more attainable goals for the remaining four as we head into the Rip Curl Pro Portugal are thus:

- If Medina loses in Round 2 or 3 in Portugal:
Apparently Slater needs a 25th to send the title race to Hawaii’s Pipeline on December 8.... 25th equals a loss in Round 2 yeah? So... why are we even looking a this one? If Medina loses in Round 2 or 3, it goes to Pipe. Case closed!

- If Medina loses in Round 4 (9th):
Parkinson & Florence will need to win, Fanning make the final, or Slater needs to make the semis in Portugal to force it to Pipeline.

- If Medina loses in the quarters (5th) place:
Parkinson & Florence will be out of the race; Fanning & Slater will need a to win Portugal to force it to Pipeline.

- If Medina loses in the semis (3rd):
Fanning & Slater will need to win in Portugal to force it to Pipeline.

- If Medina loses the final (2nd):
Fanning will be out of the race, and Slater will need to win the final to force it to Pipeline.

- If Medina wns the Rip Curl Pro Portugal:
Gabriel Medina Is the 2014 World Champion!

For Medina, it's pretty simple: Win the event, win the World Title, and if you can't do that, just make sure you finish higher than Kelly and MIck.

4. Meet Conor Oleary

Our mate Darcy Ward, has delivered this very tasty clip of Conor O’Leary. It’s a brilliant mix of well styled hi-fi surfing and chilled out modern psych music. We quite like the description Darcy wrote for young Connor, so we’ll paste it here:

A few of you may have heard of Connor from Cronulla before, but for those who are uneducated, here is a brief rundown.

The kid is half Aussie, half Japanese and surfs like a cross between Taj Burrow and Tom Curren. Kinda. His old girl Akemi is a former Japanese champ. He is currently dating pro junior dynamo Steph Single. He works as a surf coach in his spare time. He thinks Australian Japanese food “isn’t too bad.” He had a bit of a crack on the Pro Juniors, but is probably doing better on the WQS, earning himself a seed into the Prime events this year.

5. Jackson Baker In Indonesia

Jackson Baker is a freckly little ball of Newcastle. He's all the good parts of Australia's second settled city, like The Cambridge and that fish and chip shop near Newcastle beach. This is what it looks like when Jackson Baker leaves Merewether and goes surfing in Indonesia. Good onya Jacko! Go Knights and whatnot.

6. Creed McTaggart gets a surfboard model/is so hot right now

The star of West Oz's Creed McTaggart continues to soar, receiving the fine achievement that is a Hayden Shapes surfboard model in his name. The board is called the Love Buzz and is apparently a mix between The Ando, which is Craig Anderson's model, and the Hypto Krypto, which is the board Craig Anderson made famous. Creed is ripping in this promo clip for it, and so is Ando. High fives!

7. Code Zircon Episode 3

More from the crew at Afends. This series is fast becoming a standout for the year, if for anything but just not going through the same ol’ methods of short clips cut to the same ol music. Hey, a bit of narration and a well defined vibe and there you go… standout.  Ep 3 leaves Byron for Indonesia.

8. Jordy Smith Ripping In America

Sheeesh, when he’s on he’s on and Mr. Jordy Smith is really on in this Californian hi-fi highlights clip. That wrap or cut-back or whatever you want to call it is so on point. It’s like the best parts of  Parko’s and Mick’s put together. Bit of consistency and Jordy could be a real threat for that 2015 Title. But so could Taj, Mick, Parko, Kelly, John John Gabby, Julian, Adriano, Michel, Kerrsy and Kolohe.

9. Fiji From Above

Ever wondered what Cloudbreak looks like from a few hundred feet? Well, hit play and wonder no more friend, or don't hit play and just keep on wondering, not all those that wonder are lost... so they say.

10. What Does it Look Like When The Mad Hueys Put On A 1 Star WQS?

It looks like this! A fella does a shoey before his heat and someone else pretends his go-pro is a doodle behind a post-heat interview. But man, how much is Oney Anwar ripping? Are you kidding? Also the smooth goofy-foot stylings of Luey Hynd are a highlight and what about introducing young upstart with a big future ahead of him, Nathan “Noodles” Webster?

Bonus…. SUP Racing Wipeout Video

We’re not keen to fan the hate, we're all about celebrating Australian surfinga nd Stand-up Paddle surfers are a part of that. Just like bodyboarders, kneeboarders, goatboaters longboarders, shortboarders and bodysurfers. We love it all. But… when a 7 minute wipe-out video of an American SUP race emerges on the internet… hilarity, oh hilarity... it ensues.

To really embrace the comedy, mute the youtube and play the Soundcloud player below.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
