A surfer has been near-fatally attacked at Yallingup in the Margaret River region of Western Australia's surf coast. The attack happened at 3.45pm on Monday afternoon with reports of a large shark hitting the unsuspecting surfer from below, allegedly launching him three feet into the air.
Luckily the outcome wasn't fatal for Fraser Penman; A snapped board, a couple of punches thrown from the victim and his brother towards the shark happened just moments before a and a well-timed set wave had all surfers back on shore and unscathed.

Penman wrote on his Facebook wall after the event to thank his brother, "Encountered my first & last Shark attack today Down at Carparks Injis! Scariest moment of my life, yet walked away intact with nothing but a smashed Board. The biggest thank you to my lil brother Logan for instantly paddling across yelling "Punch it!" & throwing me his board saving my life. That takes a hell of a lot of courage & so much love, I am truly lucky to have you."
Officials have been warned to take caution in the area with a number of sightings and surfers & beachgoers are advise to check the SharkSmart website or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
The Department of Fisheries have said they will conduct patrols of the area from Tuesday morning.
