South Newy – The Pressure's Off

Well that was quick.

Just days before a rally planned by the Newcastle surf community, the regional council has withdrawn its plans to build out an 800 sq m concrete structure over the sand at South Newcastle beach.

The structure was intended to enclose a skate bowl.

The council will go back to the drawing board on the project, saying it intends to find a way to keep the skate bowl inside the current promenade line along the beachfront. New plans are expected to be on display some time in mid 2019.

This means the rally — planned for Saturday Jan 26 at South Newy (Nick Carroll: The Rally Against South Newy's On-The-Sand Skate Bowl Development This Saturday)— has now been postponed. The Save Our Southie Facebook page posted the following message last night: “In light of current news that Lord Mayor Nelmes has agreed to design inside the current footprint at South Newcastle the rally on Saturday is postponed pending further consultation with council as the project moved forward. I thank you all for your unwavering support to save a great natural amenity. Please communicate this postponement to all and thanks again.”

It looks like a significant win for both common sense and for coastal policy in general. Hurray!
