A classy version of a live talk show? Has to be Jack

After releasing his last movie A Deeper Shade of Blue a few years ago, Jack McCoy found himself being asked by people: would he consider running a filmmaking masterclass?

McCoy attended a couple such classes first, just to see what they were like. “They were WAY beyond my expertise,” he says. “Legendary Hollywood cinematographers, lighting techs. Amazing stuff! Not what I’d been doing.”

Instead, he wondered if he could do a masterclass on the ”why” behind filmmaking. The soul, if you will. What gets you into it? What storytelling urge, what friendship, what moment in your life flicks that switch?

Thus has inspired Jack’s current Talk Story series, running at locations up and down the east coast in the next coupla weeks (see dates and ticket info below).

Health issues have impeded Jack’s ability to shoot the way he used. He conceived the Talk Story sessions as another way to put on a show – part his own recollections of a life and career in the water, part interaction with a guest or guests who can present another angle on things.

He trialled the format last year in Perth, with Wayne Lynch: “I did it to see if anyone would come – if they didn’t, I would just take the idea back home and leave it there.” But 400 people showed up and loved it. So here we are.

I went to see the first Talk Story in Sydney back in early June, featuring guests Kai Neville and Craig Anderson. It instantly struck me that nobody’s doing anything like this in the surf culture –basically a classy version of a live talk show, with the added boost of Jack’s film archive, and guests who really brought something to the table. (In that case it was Kai’s own film experience bouncing off Jack’s, and the wonderful short piece he helped make with Ando recently.)

The unfamiliarity of the Talk Story format might cause uncertainty for some, but Jack has a simple thought for people who are wondering about it: “If you liked my surf movies, you’ll love this.”

In other words, it’s the McCoy experience, up close and personal. Jack plans to vary the content with each guest, and has “a few surprises” up his sleeve for Occ, his most enduring star, who will appear in four of the upcoming Talk Stories.

“To me it’s like sitting down with a good friend and looking at a few souvenirs of our lives together, and having a laugh,” he says.

“It’s a way I can give back. We ride a wave for 10 seconds, but we tell the story of that wave for a lifetime.”
