Breaking: Kathmandu Just Bought Rip Curl

Woaaaaaah, put out your steamers and zip on your puffer jackets!

Rip Curl have announced this morning that their iconic surf brand, which this year celebrated its 50 year anniversary, has been acquired by Australia and New Zealand based outdoor specialists Kathmandu. 

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the deal is worth $350 million. 

Founded in Torquary in 1969 by Brian Singer and Doug Warbrick, the company has remained private and on the Surf Coast ever since. Today's sale could be considered somewhat of a landmark moment for the surf industry, as it's the final of the iconic big three – Quiksilver, Billabong and Rip Curl – to no longer be under the private ownership of its founders. 

Through a pressser released this morning, Singer and Warbrick stated:

“After 50 years it’s an emotional event for us. Surfing and the surf  industry has been an integral part of our lives for more than 50 years. We realise, Rip Curl, our baby has grown into an adult recognised all over the planet and we are proud that we have created one of the  world’s great brands. We are confident the crew at Rip Curl will continue to look after the brand and products into the future. We look forward to supporting the crew on this journey”.

The presser also stated that "it is intended that the brands continue to run independently", meaning it will be in business as usual for the time being, and Rip Curl's headquarters will remain in Torquay.

Rip Curl Group CEO Michael Daly said, "There are strong parallels with both Rip Curl and Kathmandu. Bringing them together will build on our respective strengths across product, marketing and distribution channels.”

This year, Tim Baker wrote the book on Rip Curl. An extensive history called simply The Rip Curl Story, it details the "50 years of perfect surf, international business, wild characters and the search for the ultimate ride" and was launched at the company's flagship WSL event, the old Easter Rally of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

It seems poignant now that those final pages of that specific history of Rip Curl were printed in 2019.
