A couple more painful eliminations in yesterday arvo’s craggy Haleiwa. Matt Banting exits the event without gaining any points ground and is now in some danger of slipping below the cut-off by the end of this contest. Liam O’Brien also bowed out in the highest scoring heat of the day, getting a third behind Ian Gouveia and Jack Freestone, both of whom put the hammer down hard. Liam adds a tiny bit to his overall but will have to wait for Sunset for his last shot at qualifying in 2019. Cooper Chapman lost a little grip on his form in losing to Ace Buchan and Miggy Pupes.

But a super strong effort from Morgan Cibilic pushes him into the round of 32 along with Connor O’Leary, Morgan is definitely going to improve his position no matter what goes down in the next coupla days.

Really obvious yesterday was the insertion of the CT seeds, who instantly upped the game. CT players don’t waste time on 3/4 turns, they wait for the big ones and make sure they carry everything through. That said, the young South African QSers Beyrick de Vries and Davy van Zyl have all the skills and will challenge anyone they face in coming days.

The contest is stalled halfway through the round of 64 but a banging WNW swell is on the way, there’s a lot of wind in this storm and while it’s still a way off from the islands, which will mean it starts out inconsistent, it’ll really stretch Haleiwa’s limit at the peak. The commentators will talk up KS who will be in the first heat when it next hits the water, but this round’s real super-heat is waiting at number 16, with Ryan Callinan, Barron Mamiya, Jack Robinson and Tanner Gudauskas, ooof.
