The water temps are dropping in Aus and a lot of us are starting to think about perhaps upgrading the old rubber as those dawn sessions get frostier. And this here is Rip Curl’s bid for your attention – their new limited edition E Bomb E7 – designed and tested by Mick Tyler and Gabby, with their seven World Titles of experience on hand.

“I like that there’s less rubber around the shoulders,” said Fanning. “If you want to surf for two, three, four hours – it’s all about paddling. Your arms are the first to go. So if we can keep those shoulders nice and loose, then we’re golden.”

So what are the details? The new E7 neoprene has 25 per cent more stretch and is 10 per cent lighter than its predecessor, the E6. The most interesting design innovation, though, is probably the one-piece upper body panel, which according to Rip Curl “offers unparallelled stretch from wrist-to-wrist, making paddling easier”.

They add: "Under the arms the strategically designed Torpedo Gusset increases both fit and comfort during and makes paddling easier than ever before. It’s also light as a feather and like butter getting in and out of the zip free entry construction."

Says Tyler: “It feels great to get into, I love it…As soon as it’s on you can feel the difference.”

Interestingly, the wetsuit is a limited edition number, only available for as long as the stocks last – the neoprene in the suit requiring “a specialist production technique and is only available in small quantities at present”. Whether that means we’ll see this suit again in a post-COVID world, we don’t know, but if you’re keen on the suit and don’t want to risk that, you can find it in either 3/2mm or 4/3mm in Rip Curl shops and at ripcurl.com.au
