Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was June 5 2020

1. The Black Lives Matter Movement Got the World's Attention, Including the Surfing World

I'm really not interested in writing my own perspective on this issue and how it relates to surfing and surf culture in Australia. Instead of doing that I'm just going to donate my regular freelance fee for This Week In Surfng to the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, set up a monthly payment with Pay The Rent and get out of the way.

There are two covid safe paddle-outs I'm aware of in solidarity with black, indigenous and people of colour as part of @blackgirlssurf worldwide action, both happening Saturday morning in Victoria – one on the Surf Coast and one in Gippsland, organised by Surfers For Climate.

And here are a couple of Australian surf-related voices worth following and supporting that are relevant right now and always:

Juraki Surf Culture

Naru Surf Gathering

Victorian Indigenous Surfing

Otis Carey

Soli Bailey

And non-Australian:

Black Girls Surf

Sal Masekela

Here's what Soli Bailey had to say on Instagram on Tuesday:

When you are born you know nothing. As we grow as children, we innately love and are loved by everyone. We don’t even know what race or ethnicity or skin colour really is. We know people. So why, as we grow, do we lose that mentality and start to view people as different, based on race and the colour of their skin? WE ARE TAUGHT. Let’s change the curriculum of society. Now as everyone, including those who have never had to experience the effects systemic racism, is learning about the oppression that has prevailed for generations. Let’s use this knowledge as power to pave a path that doesn’t continue to rewrite history and be rid of these fucked up teachings. That we all know are not innate. To all those that are hurting; I hear you, I see you and I am with you. #blacklivesmatter Your life matters, as does mine, as does everyone else’s who are POC. So now let’s speak up and change the curriculum of society.

2. Racism and Surfing With Sal Masekela

A video of Sal Masekela's powerful speech at a Black Lives Matter paddle out in California.

3. WSL Made the No Call Call – On Hold

There was no official press release, just an Instagram and a short statement on their site reading:

"Due to the continued evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Surf League (WSL) is continuing to postpone or cancel all previously scheduled events, across all tours, and the next call will be early July."

Kinda feels like the WSL as a whole now is a surf event on a grand scale. You know, "Is it on?" "Nah, 'nother lay-day."

4. A Beautiful Cold Water Fish Film

Here's a fresh soulful little movie from Ishka Folkwell and the needESSENTIALS team. Johanna Brebner and Aiyana Powell riding a 7'6" channel twin, a Morning of the earth surfboards, 7'2" Single and a 5'4" fish Maren somewhere extremely far north and extremely not warm.

5. Did You Know Jamie Mitchell Has a Podcast?

I didn't. It's called The Un-Named Big Wave Podcast with Jamie Mitchell. This is the first episode, where our 10-time Molokai to Oahu champ slash big wave charger speaks with Makua Rothman, a former Big Wave World Tour champion himself.

6. McKenzie Bowden Feels the Flow

"You gotta harness in the good energy, block out the bad. Harness. Energy. Block. Bad. Feel the flow, Happy. Feel it. It's circular. It's like a carousel. You pay the quarter, you get on the horse, it goes up and down, and AROUND. It's circular. Circle, with the music, the flow. All good things." The Kiwi Gold Coast resident rides a twinnie on a smooth East Coast point.

7. Your Weekly Dose of Mason Ho Stoke

Mase surf's Val's Reef on a board made of some kind of new epoxy? “Light Speed Performance Epoxy”, apparently. Whatever it is, it looks like it's helped make a pretty fun surfboard.

8. The WSL Revisits the Rip Curl Search Chile 2007

If the world ever gets back to some sense of stability, can we get the WSL and Rip Curl to bring back these events? An epic Andy Irons performance right here.

9. Elliot Paerata-Reid Rips

Elliot Paerata-Reid is a young surfer from Piha New Zealand who was all set to have a big crack on the QS this year (he won the wildcard for the big Challenger Series event at Piha) before 2020 went to shit. Guess we'll have to enjoy his fast-paced, tube-charging, high-launching surfing in clips like this for the timebeing.

10. This Is How Koa Rothman Trains For Big Waves

Ahh, so just like In God's Hands. Shouts to surfing in a floppy hat and long-sleeved rash-vest too. An iconic surf look from a different era.

And that was this week in surfng. Have a good weekend everyone. Stay safe.
