Five prestigious NSW Open Surfmasters Titles were awarded today in excellent conditions on the NSW South Coast, as local competitors revelled.

Greeted with a marked increase in swell overnight, the usual crew of weather beaten, salt encrusted, sand blasted, elder statesmen and women were on hand today after a lay-day was called yesterday due to poor conditions.

With the best 200 age surfers congregating at two contest locations (Werri Beach and Bombo), to make up for lost time yesterday, five champions were decided and precious places at the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival on the line.

While their competitive still burns as strong as ever, what transpired was some high-quality surfing.

Local stalwart and Illawarra surfing luminary Terry Richardson (East Corrimal, NSW) was on-fire, returning back to the dais, after a seven year hiatus, claiming the over 50 Men’s division.

Having tasted success as the ISA World Masters Champion in 1997 and 2003 after a successful competitive career on the ASP World Tour during the eighties, Richardson wound back the clock today with an emphatic victory.

Defeating Neil Cameron (Far North Coast, NSW), John Skinner (Warilla, NSW) and Chris Trelfo (Blue Bay, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Richardson will now go on to compete at the Country Energy Australian Surf Festival in August.

Fellow Illawarra surfer, and former ASP World Tour competitor, Yvonne Byron (Bulli, NSW) destroyed her rivals in the over 28 Women’s division, annihilating her fellow finalists with a varied, backhand attack.

Defeating Sandra English (Budgewoi, NSW), Nicola Turner (Cronulla, NSW) and Karen Myers (Newcastle, NSW), who finished second, third and fourth respectively, Byron showed she can still mix it with the best.

South Coast surfer Wayne Roach (Bega, NSW) surfed with the energy and vibrancy of a young man en-route to claiming the over 55 Men’s division, defeating Colin Gow (Shell Cove, NSW), Cameron Bond (Jamberoo, NSW) and Glenn Benton (Merewether, NSW) in the final.

Current NSW, Australian and ISA World Masters Champion Rod Baldwin (Copacabana, NSW) continued his competitive domination claiming the over 45 Men’s division in style, whilst Glen Pringle (Cronulla, NSW) tore apart the over 40’s division.

With more scintillating action set to continue tomorrow, the day’s action will be headlined by the crowning of a further five prestigious state titles as the competition winds down.

About NSW Open Surfmasters Titles

The NSW Open Surfmasters decides ten state titles including the Open, Over 28, 35 and 40 year’s Men divisions.

In addition to these divisions will be the running of the Over 45 and 50 year’s Men divisions; the Open, Over 28 and 35 year’s Women competitions.

Led by current National Champions, Dane Atcheson (Copacabana, NSW), former ASP World Tour surfer Toby Martin (Dee Why, NSW). and Brett Bannister (North Narrabeen, NSW), the NSW Surfmasters sees surfers from each of the ten Surfing NSW regions competing for state supremacy.

Looking to thwart the hopes of other regions will be a host of Illawarra and South Coast talent.

Current ISA World Junior Champion Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW), ASP Australasian Pro Junior standouts Ty Watson (Currarong, NSW) and Tim Bilmon (Thirroul, NSW) and Illawarra Regional Champion Nick Squiers (North Wollongong, NSW) will all be on hand in the Open Men division, while Skye Burgess (Lake Heights, NSW) and Yvonne Byron (Bulli, NSW) will be battling it out in the Female Open and Over 28 years division’s.
