Surfing Australia Welcomes Home TravelSIM Team Australia from Peru

COOLANGATTA/QLD (Monday 15th November, 2010): Surfing Australia recently welcomed home TravelSim Team Australia, the winners of the silver medal at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games in Peru.

Stellar individual performances came from Chelsea Hedges (Gold Medal), Josh Constable (Silver Medal), Harley Ingleby (Bronze Medal) and Mick Campbell (Copper medal).

Unfortunately the Games were marred by an unsportsmanlike incident after the men’s semi final when an Australian competitor was confronted on the beach by a spectator and the team suffered both verbal abuse and potential physical harm, when objects were thrown from a small number of people in section of the crowd.

Both Surfing Australia and the International Surfing Association (ISA) have been in constant dialogue since, to ensure such an incident can never re-occur in international competition.

Norm Innis, Chairman of Surfing Australia, said, “This kind of incident is certainly regrettable. Surfing Australia has already been working on rule changes to prevent unsportsmanlike tactics occurring in heats, and we will be encouraging the adoption of those rules at the international level. Similarly the ISA assures us that there will be a full review of security prior to the next international event and naturally Surfing Australia will be conducting its own due diligence prior to sending our team overseas”.

Fernando Aguerre, President of the ISA, said “On behalf of the ISA, I unreservedly apologise to the Australian Team for the actions of a few unruly spectators.   The ISA and event organisers quickly restored full control in Peru, completing the Finals and Closing Ceremony without further incidents.  The ISA has assured Surfing Australia and all other ISA Member NGBs that it will be asking event organizers to take the necessary precautions so incidents of this nature never happen again, so the ISA World Surfing Games, World Junior Surfing Championship and World Masters Surfing Championship will continue as a showcase of the highest level of international competitive surfing”.
