The Fight for the Bight Has Been Won!

After months and months of campaigning from surfers all over the country and beyond, hundreds of paddle outs, and the biggest surfer protest movement in Australian history – Equinor has today announced that they are scrapping their plans to pursue exploratory drilling in the Great Australian Bight.

It's done. Kaput. Check ya later!

In a statement released by the Norwegian Oil company, they stated their reasons for pulling out because "the project's potential is not commercially competitive".

This comes following the news in December that Australian offshore oil and gas regulator NOPSEMA gave Equinor approval to drill an exploratory oil well in the Bight, about 400 kilometres off the South Australian coast.

Sean Doherty, who has been instrumental as a voice at the forefront of the campaign to stop the drilling, reacted to the news on Instagram with the post:

"They’ll try and save face and say it was the economics and the oil price, but the real reason is what you see right here. For every single person who paddled out around the country, and for all you legends down there in the Bight who’ve been fighting this for years, take a moment to fully appreciate what you’ve done. By paddling out and speaking up and fighting this colossally stupid idea, you’ve kept the Bight wild and free and saved it for future generations. Couldn’t be more proud of you mob. Go have a beer. I just cracked one at 10.45am."

Not a bad idea. Not a bad idea at all.

Just got the news through that Equinor have pulled their plan for the Great Australian Bight and are currently kicking a can back to Norway. Best Tuesday news I’ve had in a long time. They’ll try and save face and say it was the economics and the oil price, but the real reason is what you see right here. I just cracked one at 10.45am. #fightforthebight
