Surfing Australia Scholarship Program To Boost Australian Junior Surfers On The World Stage

COOLANGATTA/QLD (15th March, 2012): Australia’s leading junior surfers have been given a timely boost in their quest to one day qualify for the elite World Tour with the launch of the Surfing Australia High Performance Scholarship Program.

Thanks to backing from the Federal Government through the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), Surfing Australia will provide 22 athletes increased access to expert training and guidance.

The Australian surfers were selected from the ASP Australasia Pro Junior  and ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) and will be provided with ongoing competition and training support throughout the year under the guidance of Surfing Australia National Coaching Director Martin Dunn and Sport Science Manager Dr Jeremy Sheppard.

Some of the services include at-event support, strength and conditioning preparation, video analysis and remote monitoring through an online application called Kinetic Athlete.

The program has been designed so that surfers in the program are supported in every possible scenario whether they are training, injured, at events domestically or even internationally.

“The program is part of our ongoing strategy of expanding our High Performance athlete pathway so that our junior surfers have every opportunity of one day making the World Tour,” said Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark

“Once our new state of the art, surf specific training facility the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre is finished construction in June of this year at Casuarina, these athletes will not only have the expertise of our experienced staff at their disposal but a brand new world class facility to use as their base as well.

“With the help of the Federal Government the future of Australian surfing is bright.”

The year has started well for the scholarship program with rising star and scholarship holder Wade Carmichael taking out the third stop of the ASP World Pro Junior Championships at Burleigh Heads at the end of January and fellow scholarship holder Philippa Anderson placing second in women’s event and winning the trials event for the final spot in the Quiksilver Pro at Snapper Rocks.

“It will take 2-3 years before we see the lasting effects of this program but we are hopeful that from this crop of exciting young surfers we will eventually see the next Mick Fanning or Stephanie Gilmore emerge,” Stark said.
