Big Barrels On Day One Of The Chiko Alley Classic

THE May Day long weekend kicked off with blue skies and big barrels on day one of the AUD$6,000 Chiko Alley Classic, with the famed Currumbin Alley turning it on at the penultimate stop of the 2012 four-event Chiko Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC).

A fresh two-metre, south-east swell sent reeling right-hand waves down The Alley pointbreak as the race for the prestigious 2012 Queensland Open Men’s Surfing Title heats up.

Local Currumbin Alley junior Will Morrison top scored today, with a 9.33 (out of a possible 10) in the Round of 64, before unfortunately being eliminated in the next round.

The series’ top seeded athletes including current ratings leaders Nathan Hedge (North Narrabeen, NSW / Buderim, Qld) and Lincoln Taylor (North Stradbroke Island, Qld) as well as defending QCC champion Noah Lane (Burleigh Heads, Qld) will all hit the water tomorrow.

Based on competitors’ best three-of-four results, the series’ top two athletes will get the chance to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2013 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials.

To ensure the QCC‘s top two athletes are performing at their optimum for the Quiksilver Pro Trials, Surfing Queensland in conjunction with Surfing Australia will provide two-days of training at the world-class Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.

The 2012 QCC boasts a stellar AUD$30,000 prize-pool, with an extra AUD$500 randomly awarded to four competitors who compete in all four events.

Also on offer will be the highly sought after XXXX Summer Bright Lager ‘Wave of the Weekend,’ with four cartons of XXXX Summer Bright Lager awarded to the competitor who registers the event’s highest single wave score (out of a possible 10 points) across the two-day competition.

The Chiko Alley Classic is proudly supported by Chiko, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, Australia’s Surfing Life, Five and half Sunglasses, the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre, The Alley Boardriders and Surfing Queensland.

For competition start times/location, competitors and spectators can call the Surfing Queensland Events Hotline each morning of the event - Ph# (07) 3030 6388
