Not Even A Shark Alarm Could Stop The SurfAid Cup At Bondi Beach
It was all systems go on Friday May 18, 2018 when a juvenile shark cruised through the heat 1 of the USANA Surfaid Cup, sounding the alarm at Bondi Beach.
But this pint-sized predator did little to disturb the 13 teams who were ready for battle in the punchy rip bowls.
Combined, these teams raised over $125,000 for SurfAid’s Mother and Child Health Programmes. A staggering result, that will provide basic needs such as clean water & sanitation, healthcare, and improved nutrition for a great number of Indonesian villages. Many of them, near iconic surf breaks.
Among the competitors were big wave chargers Laura Enever and Flick Palmateer who joined an allstar lineup of Andy King, Beau Mitchell, Toby Martin, Johnny Gannon and Kobi Clements, to be assigned charity teams in the early picks.
In the end, local knowledge shone through with Bondi's own 'Pipeline Plumbing' team taking the win over the Fishbowl and Aquabumps teams, who are longtime supporters of SurfAid and the efforts of their founder Dr. Dave Jenkins.
With the proceeds of this event bringing much-needed relief to remote communities in Indonesia, it's hats off to SurfAid, who have again succeeded in creating positive change through a sustainable community effort.
