QS Update: Big Day For the Boy Most Likely

There’s been a fair few hopes riding on Jack Robinson’s shoulders over the past coupla years.

There’s been a lot of shit talked about his old man too, and about the seemingly unorthodox career path the kid has travelled — outside the conventional training regimes and systems of modern Australian surfing, instead way back inside the barrel of the world’s best waves.

Jack put all that behind him today with a great finishing flourish, winning the Vans World Cup in groomed north swell Sunset and qualifying for the 2020 CT in the process.

He’s joined in the QS upgrade by Connor O’Leary, and by Ethan Ewing, who also shone today to seal an unexpected CT spot, and looks way more ready for that top layer now than he did the first time round a couple of years ago.

The three help make up one of the more interesting qualifier packs of the past few years, with a mix of age and fresh faces, nationalities and styles. Young Novocastrian Morgan Cibilic will have to wait till Pipe to see if he makes the cut — at 11th he’s one out just behind Deivid Silva, who can qualify through the CT (Deivid is currently two places inside the CT cut-off).

Morgan should rue his priority error in the quarterfinals today, when he took off on Stu Kennedy while Stu had priority, oops. Stu finishes in 12th, and may well be in line for some CT call-ups in 2020.

Just missing also today was Zeke Lau, who like Jack needed to win, but finished third after an extremely strange incident early in the final. Zeke found a bomb, jangled his way into a crazy deep pit, then ran over Jack who was paddling out at the time. It busted Zeke’s outside fin and changed the momentum of the final right at the outset. You hardly ever see that kinda thing these days, but Sunset’s Sunset. It’ll do anything to anyone, as even Kelly will no doubt have re-discovered after getting pumped in the shorie yesterday.

Great effort also by Hawaii’s Cody Young to make the final alongside the three QS challengers. Really, the last two days at Sunset have been fantastic. Big strong surfers were tossed around like toys, deep barrels were ridden, and hardly a wave was wasted, showing the value of four-banger heats at big open surf zones like this one.

Jack now has his foot on the ladder. I dunno if he and Ethan talk much but Ewing would have a bit to tell him about that ladder. But the CT prep can wait a few days. For now, hurray.

Final Top 10 Rankings for the 2019 WSL Qualifying Series

1. Frederico Morais – 26,400
2. Jadson Andre – 23,800
3. Yago Dora – 23,200
4. Matthew McGillivray – 22,580
5. Jack Robinson – 21,930
6. Alex Ribeiro – 21,580
7. Miguel Pupo – 21,000
8. Ethan Ewing – 20,400
9. Connor O’Leary – 19,650
10. Deivid Silva* – 18,650
11. Morgan Cibilic – 18,100

*Deivid Silva is currently double qualified, as he sits 21st on the WSL Championship Tour (the cut-off is 22). Should he fail to qualify on the CT, he will qualify via the QS, and Morgan Cibilic will fall below the QS cut-off
