COASTALWATCH | SWELL EVENT

"Every other committed soul along 600km of coastline was scratching out their favourite step-ups and abandoning any other weekend plans they’d made..." writes Nick Carroll, in a wonderful piece about this swell that we'll be publishing very soon. It's been a remarkable swell. And slowly but surely the footage has been eeking out into little edits here and there of extraordinary ocean and the brave surfers who got amongst it (perhaps including some that shouldn't have). Here are five of our favourites so far. By no means will they be the best that drop from this event, but they're certainly five that give a sense of the feeling that went across our east coast at the end of May.

Friday on the Gold Coast:

We got started with not massive conditions, but cooking ones on the Gold Coast with a host of stars getting pitted in some beautful beachies. Video by MySurfTV.

Merewether Saturday:

Again, Merewether Saturday:

A land view of Rhys Smith and Paul Mountford's ten hour tow session on Saturday May 23. It should be noted, celebrated, remembered that not only were they out there getting it, but they also spent the session driving in and out of the break picking up surfers and dropping them out the back. Legend-making stuff.

A Hall-of-Fame Rock-Off Video:

The thing that makes horror movies the worst, most stomach-churning experiences isn't the horror itself, no, it's the waiting. The knowing that something isn't right, the edge of your seat unsettling feeling that things are going to get very very bad. This is the rock-off version of that. Filmed in Sydney on Saturday. Coogee, Saturday May 23:

A pretty raw edit this one, but that's what suits a swell like this best. Getting a feeling of walking down to the local and joining the throngs of people lining clifftops and carparks – Big Wednesday style – and spending the day watching local surfers face the awesomeness of nature.

Bonus... that one wave of Kelly's as the swell hit on Friday...
