Hoverboards, Indoor Surfing Backflips, & Ryan Burch is Crazy Awesome – This Week In Surfing

It's like going to the future in the 90s.
Ten Things From Surfing and The Internet

1. Portugal Happened
Well, well, well… we didn’t see that coming. Did you? Did you see it coming? The death of Wolverine? It’s happening people. Marvel are killing off the yellow suited grumpy dude with the burns and long fingernails. Which is almost as unexpected as the seemingly unbeatable Gabby Medina putting in some truly wobbly boot performances throughout the Euro leg of the tour. Pressure? You bet. And swell. Had the surf never capped the four foot mark we’d now be watching the ASP trophy boarding a plane for Rio because Gabby in French and Portuguese shoreys is near perfect. But all that swell, all those rips, all that unpredictable moving Atlantic, it got to the young ratings leader. And who was there to capitalise? Not Kelly. Not Wolverine. But the defending World Champion Michael Eugene Fanning. See you at Pipeline homeslices!
P.S. Dear John John, thank you for your surfing in Europe this month. We love you so much. Like, we’re outside your house right now… watching you sleep. You’re an angel when you sleep. Has anyone ever told you that?
2. Ryan Burch Is Awesomer Than Awesome
Surf clips don’t come much cooler than this. Ryan Burch should be put straight on your favourite surfers list. He just should. And if you don’t have a favourite surfers list then put him in your list of favourite football players, or celebrity gardeners or favourite songs. Do it.
3. Kelly Slater’s Does 540,720 dollars
On behalf of every 40+ year old on planet Earth we’d like to offer a sincere thank you to Kelly Slater. In making the world’s first 540 degree air-reverse we thank you for the opportunity to regret every beer and cigarette and piece of fast food we’ve ever put in our face holes.
4. Kolohe does something
We’ve featured quite a bit of California’s Kolohe Andino in TWIS over the past few months. Remember that thing we ran? And then there was that other thing about the stuff? Well now he’s done something else. Look.
5. More Namibia, this time Dale Staples
Watching clips of the famous Namibian Desert left churning off 40 second tube after 40 second tube is a bit like staring into a fire. Look hard enough and you might just find the meaning of life in there, or a seal, provided of course that someone has thrown a seal on the fire you’re looking into.
6. This is everything we dreamed of in the 90s
Surfing’s kinda cool and all, but why does it always have to be done outside? LAME! Thankfully someone has invented the indoor stationary wave and the coolest kids in the world are totally shredding on it to the max! If this were a scene in a movie where kids use karate to take down giant crime lords, my 90s life would be complete. Go to 0:38 seconds for the best moment you never saw coming. Take that guys!
7. Meet Holly Wawn
Have you met Holly Wawn yet? She surfs almost every day with Ozzie Wright. Other interesting fact: You can’t lick your own elbows.
8. Hover Boards
Just in the nick of time McFly! In the 1989 film Back to the Future II, Marty and his pal Doc Brown travel to 2015 to save Marty’s kids from being dorks. While there Marty has a run-in with a gang of youths riding hoverboards. While the film was clearly fiction that didn’t stop a bunch of scientists 30 years and millions of dollars making sure the hoverbaord was real by the time 2015 rocked around. Like Miki Dora used to say: “Life is a waste of time, may as well waste it making a hoverboard.” Or something like that.
9. JJ Duckdive
Want to know how John John Florence gets out the back on days when the surf is so massive you can’t even see the horizon? Behold! Note: Sadly, hoverboards will eliminate the use of duckdiving.
10. North American Barrel Fest
The American far North East has some pretty nice beachbreaks on its day as is evidenced in this clip supplied by the interent. Other interesting fact: The internet is also logging all your personal information to one day use against you. Hooray internet!
Bonus...
Our pal Nanda Ormond who does all the amazing illustration work you see in the pages of Surfing World Magazine has teamed up with the rad dudes at Rhythm in putting together their campaign for their latest boardshort... or trunks. Which do you say, trunks or boardshorts? My 72 year old father says trunks. Hey Dad!
And that was this week in surfiing. Have a good weekend everyone.
