Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was December 22, 2017

1. John John Won The Title!

As anyone with even a passing interest in competitive surfing would know by now, John John Florence won the World Title this week. The superstar Hawaiian has gone back to back as the WSL World Champion, winning a race that included three others after making the final of the Billabong Pipe Masters. It was a wild final day, and a wild comp in all, throwing the Internet plenty of things to argue about while backdoor pipe broke small and perfect and inviting throughout. Jeremy Flores was the one that confirmed it for JJF when he beat Medina in the semis. Medina would have had to win the event to be a chance at winning his second World Title. JJF made the final which would have nullified that chance for Medina anyway, but Flores’s win over andyMedina meant that the moment John John was crowned was once againe one where he wasn’t in the water, something the WSL’s new format will be eradicating in 2019 when a new format for deciding World Champs will be introduced.

Even after the World Title was won, the Pipe Masters delivered more entertainment. John John, who grew up on the doorstep of Pipe, the most famous wave in the world, has never won surfing's most prestigious competition it plays host to. John John Florence, despite being a World Champion twice over, and despite being considered one of the greatest surfers to ever surf Pipe, can not be called a Pipe Master. That looked to be ratified, easily, this year while the final seconds of 2017’s final heat ticked down. But then, with just 17 seconds left, Jeremy Flores stood up on his surfboard and took off on a backdoor Pipe wave. He needed an 8.27. He got an 8.33. Flores won the second Pipe Masters title in his career, and in doing so left John John’s career with something big to still strive for.

2. A Quick Look Back At John John's 2017

We’re sure John John won’t be too worried about the Pipe Masters right now, though. He’s the fricken World Champ. The first to go back to back since Tyler Wright, like a week ago! Here’s a clip put out by WSL that goes through the long year that brought John John to the top.

3. Hurley's Celebration Clip, Featuring Someone With A John John Tattoo!

And while we’re still celebrating, let’s look at Hurley’s tribute clip to John John’s extraordinary World Title year in 2017. Is there anyone in the surfing world who doesn’t like John John? He’s the best. He really is! But is he good enough to get tattooed on your wrist? The answer of that for someone is at 3.43. I spose it's not that wild, I got paid $500 to get my friend's name (Jono) tattooed on my lip once, and he hasn't won any World Titles.

4. Tour Notes From Pipe

The last Tour Notes for the year gives us a from-the-beach perspective of the final day of the Pipe Masters. How great are the groms having a go at each other about going for John John?

The episode, most interestingly, gets Kelly Slater’s perspective on the Gabriel Medina drop-in incident he experienced firsthand. It’s so strange that no-one on the Internet had anything to say about that one. Not a single word. Nothing. Weird.

5. Connor O'Leary Won Rookie of The Year

From an Australian perspective, the biggest win at the Pipe Masters for us was the clinching of rookie of the year by Cronulla underdog Connor O’Leary. He finished 13th on the rankings and beat Frederico Morais to the title by just 50 points. Surfer Magazine made this great little film hanging out with him in Cronulla recently and it’s very worth watching. Congratulations Connor, you’re a legend!

6. The Dooley's World Title Ep

The day after John John won the title, Danny Johnson and his new pet sloth jump on The Dooley podcast and, through the magic of quizzing, talk the World Title, Jeremy Flores’s Pipe win, the retirement of Aussie legends, the rookie of the year triumph and all the surfers who we’ll never see again. Plus, a suggestion that Mick Fanning is retiring and that competitive surfers should dress like jockeys Give it a listen.

7. Sticking In Hawaii, Nikki Van Dijk!

While we’re wrapping the fun of the Hawaii season, Nikki Van Dijk talks us through her perspective of surfing the islands every northern hemisphere winter. Hey, Nikki won her first CT in 2017 this year, isn’t that great?

8. Never Enough Yago Dora

Who are you most excited about being on the CT next year? Is it Aussie Wade Carmichael? Or the Triple Crown winning Californian Griffin Colapinto? Perhaps it should be this super freak Craig Anderson comp machine hybrid from Brazil named Yago Dora? Yago made the semi-final of the Oi Rio Pro this year after qualifying for the event through the trials, so he’s already proved he’s not to be truffled with in the big leagues.

9. Barrel Hunting In Morocco

Some bit of escapist surf fantasy from Northern Africa with this clip coming at us from the long walled, cold water rights of Morocco. It stars Israeli pro surfer Yoni Klein and features a lot of perfect barrels. Plus there’s a shot of a camel at one point. Camels are good.

10. Let's take a moment to reflect on how remarkable a year we've had with Owen Wright!

Can you believe he was a major player in the Title race all the way up until October? This is a nice tribute from his team and friends at Rip Curl and the WSL, where we learn that near-everyone calls him “O-dog”.

This Week In Not Surfing

Does this cliff jump make you feel all weird in the pit of your stomach as he heads for the rocks on the bottom there? God, total nightmare shit.
