Ten Things From Surfing & The Internet On The Week That Was March 9, 2018

1. Vale George Downing

George Downing, one of the most legendary legends of our sport and culture,ga passed away peacefully in his sleep this week at age 87. Downing grew up in Hawaii and came of age in surfing as a complete big wave surfer in the era when the Makaha International was considered surfing's most important event and unofficial World Title. He won it in 1954, 61 and 65. It was at Makaha where he too broke new grounds in what was possible in big wave surfing. This tradition lived on too, with his son Keone winning the Eddie at Waimea in 1990. To put it simply, Downing was as close to surfing gets to royalty. A titan, a great, a legend in the realest sense of the world.

As we so often do when these things happen, we'll throw to the words Kelly Slater wrote on his Instagram in tribute to the great George Downing:

"A Hui Hou, #GeorgeDowning. It was an honor to surf on your call when #TheBayCallsTheDay for over two decades in #TheEddieAikau. Condolences to your vast group of friends and family. You will be sorely missed and fondly remembered as a good guy and a great shaper and waterman (and even the first person to put a removable fin on a surfboard). Mahalo Nui Loa!"

The video below is by Matt Warshaw from his Encyclopaedia of Surfing:

2. The Quiksilver and Roxy Pros Start On Sunday!

Today feels like one of those days in primary school where you know you're having a class party before big play, and you can smell them cooking party pies and mini-sausage rolls. There's excitement in the air, the WSL CT is imminent! So let's get to know one of the hottest rookies we've seen in years, Griffin Colapinto, with this Billabong produced Welcome To The Big Leagues clip.

Also, let's congratulate Caroline Marks, 2018 rookie of the year already.

3. It Was International Women's Day This Week Too

What a wonderful day for men to post photos of their girlfriends on Instagram, like it's Valentines Day. Cause that's what it's about right? That or worrying about how feminism affects men... Ah well. Anyway, at least the WSL released this inspiring cip for us. Pam Burridge for the win!

4. Harry Bryant Riding a Soft-Top Is a Lot of Fun

Harry Byrant is a lot of fun in general. Add him ripping on a Catch Surf soft top into the mix, and we're in for a neat little Friday afternoon, aren't we?

5. The WSL Awards Were Last Night

On Thursday night the annual banquet before event no.1 on the Gold Coast saw all the world's most elite competitive surfers doll up in black tie and get photographed with trophies.

You remember who won the big ones (John John and Tyler won the World Title, Steph and Gabriel took the runners up, Connor O'Leary and Bronte Macaulay won rookie of the year), so we'll list the ones you mightn't know.

Heat of the Year:
Lakey Peterson vs. Carissa Moore –Quarterfinal at Trestles
Gabriel Medina vs. Julian Wilson – Final in Tahiti

Move of the Year:
Carissa Moore at Trestles
John John Florence at Margaret River

Wave of the Year:
Stephanie Gilmore in Maui
Filipe Toledo (BRA) at J-Bay

6. Garrett Parkes Is Very Good

And he rides for Afends these days. The Byron Bay lad has evolved into a hard charging core lord of modern surfing, and so long as we keep being fed clips like this, it's great to see.

7. SnakeTales From Manly

Jake Paterson's QS Scrapbook continues from the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro. Probably both the best and longest surfing web series at the moment. Best moment captured in this one is a bunch of school kids stoked to see Griffin Colapinto at about the 8.50 mark.

8. A Rookie To Be Aware Of

I've been hearing a lot of hype around this young Brazillian, Michael Rodriguez as a possible dark horse for Snapper. He recently got profiled by new Brazillian surf mag Moist (which has been making a lot of great clips lately). I certainly like his attitude when he says he wants to be someone you'd put on your Fantasy Surfing team.

9. The McTavish Trim Was Sick

Part of the Byron Bay Surf Festival is this really rad event down at Wategoes featuring some of the best longboarders/loggers in the world, spanning the globe and generations, from Ray Gleave to Jared Mell, to Bryce Young, to Ari Browne, to Lola Mignot, to Al Knost, to Kassia Meador, to Thomas Bexon and so many more. What a stellar line-up of ultimate style masters having a hell time.

10. Caio Ibelli In Baja

Honestly, you could put any old surfing to the music of French surf-pop band La Femme and I'll be into it. Put some nice light, fun waves and a world class CT surfer into the mix and I'm 100% behind it. This clip also serves as a good pre-roll into Snapper though, and after watching it we can ask: Will Caio Ibelli make a dent at Snapper this year? And watching this we can answer:  ¯\_(?)_/¯ ugh.

This Week's Classic Surf Music Memory

This Week In Surfing's Classic Surf Music Memory is brought to you by Summer Bright Lager

As WSL commentator, Joe Turpel is the voice of modern professional surfing (alongside Ronnie Blakey). But did you know that when he was 19 he was the voice of a So Cal, Momentum era punk band? The band was called Lun and they are all Pennywise and Taylor Steele and early mid-90s awesomeness, (despite them operating in the early 2000s). Turpel told Stab when asked about the band a couple of years ago: "We thought we were good but I don't think we really were. I found a CD the other day and I was like, 'Wow that sounds really bad.'"

Check out Summer Bright's Lager's Summer Sessions Music Tour this summer where unfortunately Joe Turpel won't be playing, but Alex Lahey will.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
