Ten Things From Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was May 24, 2019

1. Keramas Is Still Going

Well, the Corona Bali Protected has been one of those events. One of those events where after a slowish start, things finally start to feel like they're rolling, and then the swell drops and we're sitting on our hands for nearly a week. A waiting comp. They're up to the quarter-finals for both the men's and women's events, which they're going to try and run today (Friday), to get the best conditions available and get the comp done on Saturday, which just so happens to also be the last day of the waiting period.

Probably the most exciting development for this event has been the performance of Kelly Slater, who has surfed his way into a quarter-final. That makes it at a minimum of back to back quarter-finals, and will put him well inside the top ten for the first time in yooooonks.

Interestingly, if you take away the injury withdrawals of last year, the last four CT events Slater has surfed has seen him claim two thirds and a 5th. That roll continues with at a minimun a 5th here, and this is the kind of consistency that puts you amongst the surfers reaching for a World Title come Hawaii. It's truly remarkable.

Kelly faces Filipe Toledo in his QF, and the WSL, with ample time on their hands, have been enjoying building it up to be something of a blockbuster, and why not?

2. Julian Wilson's Web Series

Julian Wilson’s got a new web series and it’s definitely not a YouTube vlog. We can tell it’s not a YouTube vlog because umm… because… it’s not on YouTube! It also doesn’t have him walking around talking to the camera about what he’s doing as he’s doing it. The third and final factor is the fact that someone has taken some care with both the editing and filming. Those three traits seem to be the difference, and, for me, they make it eons more entertaining, even the quiet moments where little is happening are really nice. But I’m biased; I can’t stand YouTube Vlogs (unless they’re Jack Black’s) and I kinda sorta like when filmmakers kinda sorta give a shit about what they’re putting out there. Top work to all involved here.

3. Parker Goes To Waco

And in stark contrast to the Julian Vimeo film-like series, we come back to one of the most prolific YouTube surfer vlogs getting around at the moment, one of the top dogs, Your Weekly Tube by the Coffin Brothers. This is a pretty sick one though, as the junior Coffin Brother, Parker, heads to the Waco Wave Pool with Bobb Martinez (yes!) and Bethany Hamilton (double yes!). I hate on the YouTube surf vlogs a lot, but I’m here for this one! Also, Parker is riiiiiipping.

4. A Clay Marzo Clip?

The surf gods have blessed us this week, ladies and gentlemen. The surf gods have sent us, with absolutely no warning, as is their wont, a fresh Clay Marzo clip. The talk-little surf-lots Hawaiian super talent drops one of these clips about once a year, and they are always excellent, and they are always left-hander exclusive. 2019's version stays the course.

5. The Keramas Red Bull Airborne Comp Was Good

Red Bull have pulled together an edit from their Airborne event during the Keramas CT. Featuring Jack Freestone (winner), Chippa Wilson, Matt Meola, Mason Ho, Noa Deane and a heap of other air freaks having fun in colourful singlets.

6. Mason Ho's Evil Twin

Mason Ho and novelty waves that break over, into and around dry rocks… it never gets old. Here, Mason Ho is surfing a …Lost model called the Evil Twin. The new and fun innovation on this one is the addition of a GoPro angle of the rocks which, yep, look just as crazy from the surfer’s perspective. Shoutout to the grommets attempting the tandem!

7. This Is What Ace is Riding In Bali

While Ace Buchan takes us through all the boards he’s brought to Bali for the Corona Bali Protected, can we take a moment to recognise how good it is that Ace has made the quarters at the skatepark wave that is Keramas while he’s still rehabbing a major knee injury. What a legend!

8. Sterling Spencer Has a New Movie

Sterling Spencer surf movies are always an interesting exercise in pushing the form into different directions. His older movies were the freshest, most hilarious surfing films getting around in an era where nothing was funny and everything was cool. I haven’t had time to watch this yet, but Spencer has been on more of a spiritual kick lately (following an open battle with depression), and by the looks of it this film follows that suit. Surfer Magazine called it a "strangely-funny, deeply personal film". Another viewer commented on the video, “Two words after watching: Transcendental Meditation…”

9. Albee Layer and Friends At Teahupoo

This is actually from last week, but what ya gonna do? Hawaiian super friends Albee Layer, Ian Gentil, and Kalani David join up with some local Tahitian Teahupo’o chargers and do what you do at the end of the road in Tahiti. Gives a nice perspective of that Teahupo’o life too.

10. Jamie O'Brien Takes Fancy Camera Into Massive Mex Barrels

Jamie O’Brien takes a GoPro Fusion, which is a 360 degree view GoPro, into some big old Mexican pits. Surfing starts at the seven minute mark. I'd suggest going straight there.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
