Rio Begins, Jordy Scores Mental Mexican Pits, and China Has a Wave Pool Now
COASTALWATCH | THIS WEEK IN SURFING
Ten Things From Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was June 21, 2019
1. Rio Started Last Night
I stayed up till 3am watching the first half of the elimination round of the Men's Oi Rio Pro in some kind of fever dream last night, and the things I remember are that Gabriel Medina looked unbeatable after an iffy start, John John Florence looked like the World no.1, and Yago Dora destroyed all comers, top scoring the round with the best heat total which included a blistering 9 point ride. On the other side of the fence, Jordy Smith appeared lost and out of rhythm in the tricky line-up, sending himself into the elimination round alongside World No.2 Kolohe Andino. The Women's side of the event had Carissa Moore, Courtney Conlogue and local Sivana Lima looking strongest, while world no.4 Sally Fitz and world no.7 Malia Manuel would be most disappointed to have to surf in the elimination round.
The biggest highlight of the event so far though is watching how absolutely mental the crowds are in Brazil and how aggressive the security are at man-handling them when they step near Gabriel Medina. There's surely some kind of drinking game in that.
Will they surf over the weekend? Well, “Saturday, Sunday looks fantastic,” said the new CT commissioner Pat O’Connell, yesterday. And that's it for now. That's Rio.
2. While We're In Brazil, Let's Watch This Hype Clip From The Guy Who Might Win It
Is Italo the coolest/funniest/best dude on the CT? He’s certainly in the mix and a character we’re so lucky to have at the top end of our sport. Putting Tyga and Nicki Minaj to this clip of him absolutely ripping, and also working out in the gym… it’s just a *chef’s kiss* of a clip. Italo to win Brazil this week, I think.
3. Jordy Getting Barrelled off His Head In Mexico
Jordy Smith is having a really good year in WSL heat jerseys and it looks like he’s been having a pretty good year out of them too, if this clip of him surfing sick righthand Mexican beachie points is anything to go by.
4. A Crews Through Europe
That pun sucks and I am sorry, but my boy Mitchy Crews is here and I am excited. Surfing through Europe, the Gold Coast frother brings the froth to a really nice well-rounded clip. Digging the flame sleeves, too.
5. China's First Wave Pool
All that money, all that equipment, and they couldn't invest in a single tripod... shame.
6. Young Bloods Hit The Ments
Oh my lord, some of these waves are just mind-blowing. Noah Stocca, Cooper Davies, Wade Clemens, Keanu Miller and Ethan Stocks did a grom boat trip to the Mentawai Islands and did some surfing. Watching this has me daydreaming about booking a trip… my bank balance has me daydreaming about one day being able to afford it.
7. Ain't That Swell Does Tassie
I haven't listened to this yet, but I'm gonna go ahead and slap a language warning on this bad boy anyway. Jed and Vaughan head to Tassie to do one of their epic live shows and are joined by Occy, Parko, Marti Paradisis, and Mick Lawrence.
8. Courtney Conlogue Rules, Here She Is Shreddng South Africa
Courtney Conlogue is injury free in 2019 and loving life, back in the top five, and one of the four women to win one of the four events this year. It’s good to see. It’s also good to see well made surf clips of our CT stars travelling and freesurfing like this. More please.
9. Ozzie Wright, The Greatest Man Who Ever Lived
This clip is called: Ozzie Wright Has More Fun Surfing Than Anyone Else In The Water... and never has a truer word been spoken.
10. Jack White is Playing At a CT this year
The freshly named Freshwater Pro (formerly the Surf Ranch Pro), you know, the pool comp in September, has been getting a bit of promo this week as tickets to the all-ticketed event are now on sale. And amongst the promo was the announcement that Jack White's the Raconteurs will be performing on the Saturday night of the event. Tickets are $55 USD, which is actually not bad considering a ticket to a Raconteurs gig would go for more than that anyway, plus groms under 10 are free. Strangely, there are no general admission tickets available to the Friday of the event, only the Saturday. The other ticket options – VIP for $499, the Surf Ranch Experience for $5499, the private VIP Beach Cabana for "contact us" – all get you in to the Friday. I'm not sure if General tickets will become available for other days or not at this stage. Which is... interesting?
And while we're talking about the Surf Ranch Pro, I mean the Freshwater Pro, whatever happened to the Founders Cup? Remember that? The "inaugural" international team's event they ran at the pool in May last year? Never again? Sure!
And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone! Let's go Sam Kerr!
