Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was February 7, 2020

1. Wigolly Won the Volcom Pipe Pro

Some half-decent QS points were won this week at the whole-decent Banzai Pipeline by Wigolly Dantas, who became the first Brazillian to win the very good event – he joins an A-grade list of Pipe dudes to win it that includes John John, Jack Jack, and Jamie O'Brien. He also takes home 5000 points and the early QS ratings lead (actually, he's equal second, after Japanese surfer Shun Murukami won the Corona Open China (lol, that was an actual named event in 2020) and also added 330 points for coming 33rd at Pipe, while Nat Young got 5000 for winning the Pro Taghazout Bay.

Unfortunately there were no standout Australian performances, results wise, with no Australians getting past Round 5 and into the quarters. So, on to the next one I guess... of which the next semi major one is the Oi Hang Loose Pro in Brazil (a QS5000) starting Feb 11. Then in our region we'll have the QS5000 Surfest in Newcastle March 2, followed up by the Sydney Surf Pro – the first of the fancy new QS CS events, which means Qualifying Series Challenger Series, I think, and is worth the full 10,000. QS Update, out!

2. Billy Kemper and Kai Lenny at Jaws is Bonkers

Billy and Lenny are the stars here, make no mistake, but can we take a moment to appreciate the giant tube that Adriano packs at Jaws in this edit?! What the hell? I didn't know Adriano charged like that. What a mad-man!

Some people are calling Kemper's wave at 8.35 possibly the best wave ever ridden. It's pretty bloody outragous. What do you think? And what do you think of Kai Lenny's ridiculous aerial antics? And what do you think about coriander? Did you know that in North America they call it cilantro? A lot of things to think about here.

3. John John, Meola and Albee do Airs in WA

This clip comes from when John was filming his big internet busting edit, Done, eight years ago. Matt Meola narrates it and reckons this contains the best backside air he's ever landed. The low-key highlight, though, is the little cameo of baby Jack Robinson at 2.03. So little!

4. Imogen Caldwell Getting Aussie Desert Tubes

Hell yeah! speaking of West Aus, here's Michelle Des Bouillons visiting Aussie Imogen Caldwell to get some incredible desert tubes. And Craikey's ripping too! Does it feel like there's been an abundance of West Aussie desert tube clips the last ten weeks? It's been pretty pretty pretty good.

5. Medina Freesurfing For A Rip Curl Ad

Like Mick in full comp, World Title hunting mode – footage of Gabriel Medina without a heat rashie, cut into a freesurf web clip like this is an extraordinarily rare occurence. Unlike a Mick freesurf clip, there's about a million massive aerials in this thing.

6. Italo Surfed Nazaré?

This clip is called Preseason Portugal 2020... and it's a five minute freesurf edit of our current World Champion, People's Champion, everyone's fave, Italo Ferreira. It has all the high energy, big turn, big air surfing you'd expect from this kind of thing, and then it has a part you wouldn't expect – tow surfing Nazaré!? Didn't see that coming.

7. Michel Bourez at Home in Tahiti for Sound Waves

I can no longer keep up with all these behind the scenes, mic'd up clips surfing is doing at the moment, but I'm into them all. This one features recent free agent and former Pipe Master Michel Bourez getting around his home event at Teahupo'o... how's that 9.43 to end it? Heart-in-mouth stuff right there.

8. The O'Neill Team in Hawaii – Nothing But Surfing

O’Neill wraps up their Hawaii Live YouTube series with one final straight up surf edit featuring their team of Jordy Smith, Ian Crane, Soli Bailey, Eli Olson, Brett Barley, Torrey Meister, Brett Barley, Timmy Reyes, Russell Bierke, Brett Barley and, ummm, Brett Barley. Bit of a mixed bag this one – Pipe stuff, other wave stuff, big stuff, small stuff, tube stuff, turn stuff. Just all the stuffs, really.

9. Jeremy Flores Getting Mega-Kegged in France

Jeremy Flores won the Quik Pro France in 2019 – now the mainland beach breaks of his country honour him during the winter months with incredible six hour stand-up keg sessions like this one. Sidenote: What's your favourite word for a wave? "Keg" just feels right for these ones.

10. Volcom Made an Ad with an Invisible Surfer

Remember when you went to bed praying for a boardshorts ad where the surfer was made invisible? I remember you doing that. Turns out Volcom intercepted your prayers and made this for you. Are you disappointed? Suppose sometimes dreams become nightmares. I get the feeling this invisible surfer is going to visit me in the middle of the night and blast Jack Johnson "Bubble Toes" through my speakers... terrifying.

Bonus...

Hey, Owen Wright got married! He got married to Aussie singer, and his longtime belle and the mother of his kid, Kita Alexander. Congratulations Owen and Kita. You look great!

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
