Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was May 8 2020

1. Dane Reynolds' Has a New Website, Chapter 11 TV

"Sometimes the absurdity of trying to make surf videos becomes perfectly clear. This particular morning I showed up before dawn and the waves weren’t what I had hoped for..."

In the era of the surf blog, Dane Reynolds' Marine Layer was king. Light touch edited clips of the then arguably best surfer in the world, certainly the most influential, surfing around his home in Ventura to some usually esoteric music. The clips would often come with a little story written by Dane, his writing, it should be noted, is as lucid as it comes in surf. Shit was the best, and it's never been matched since. Now a dad and well into his 30s, he's back with a new similar Marine Layer style blog, Chapter 11 TV, and this week dropped a fresh clip for it. It's not the best video he's ever made, but that feels like half the point.

Getting excited for Dane's thing here, while the rest of the surf world does to-the-camera YouTube vlogs, I've never felt so old and out of touch with the kids. Rattling on about how internet surf content was so much cooler ten years ago, becoming an old kook is great!

To see the clip, you gotta head to his site over here.

2. It's Rip Curl's Search Week, Remember This Ridic River Wave?

It's another themed week from the crew at Rip Curl, following Mick and Tyler specials, this time going with perhaps an even more intrinsic part of their make-up. The Search. The funny thing about the content they've led with first up is that this tidal bore river wave was such a massive, earth-shattering deal when it happened, and until this week I had absolutely no memory of it. None. Zilch. Not even the hilarious name for the campaign ("Tip 2 Tip"). Anyway, here's the ridiculous video imagery of Seven Ghosts.

3. Mason Ho's Pipe Edit Rules

Leave it to Mase to put out the best clip from the epic Pipe swell that came through last week. No shortage of legends in this one either, with Derek Ho making a ridiculous drop right from the start. Anyone else worried about the wellbeing of the dude who ditched at 2.08? Hope he got home okay...

4. A Full Movie From the Salty Crew

Got 30 minutes to kill? Of course you do. Here's Matt Meola, Damien Hobgood, West-Aussie Jerome Forrest and more in a pretty serious production of a surf movie here called Thrill Seekers & Risk Takers. Featuring Alaska, Canada (British Columbia), Mexico, WA, New Zealand, and California, it's worth your time. Especially if you're into fishing.

5. Three Minutes of Pure Style and Joy with Noa Mizuno

Surfing is stupid and fun, just like 80s disco – which is why this clip by rising Hawaiian pro Noa Mizuno hits the spot so perfectly. Plus, how fun do the waves in this clip look?

6. Ireland's Big Wave Guys Scored the Best Slab Swell In Years

How weird is seeing Teahupo'o when it's cold and dark and not in Tahiti but actually in Ireland? It's so weird when that happens. So weird.

7. Hell Yeah, Wad Goodall has a Movie Out Next Week

Wade Goodall is one of the goodest fellas in Australian surfing, and also one of the best to put his freesurfing down on MP4 the past decade and a half. Teaming up with Shane Fletcher, they've got a major edit dropping next Friday that looks to have some Mad Max energy. Plus, Dane makes a cameo. Keen!

8. A JOB Best Waves Compilation

Pipe Master and Wave of the Winter winner Jamie O'Brien has been putting out YouTube vlogs for years and years and years, and this week Red Bull went and compiled the best single waves out of all those episodes. That is a lot of barrels. A! Lot!

9. Pumping French Beachies

A clip that doesn't mess around: Bit of pysch-rock, some big hollow beachies, and that's pretty much it. This was shot over three days in January at La Gravière. The surfer is Charly Quivront.

10. Woah, Check Out 15-Year-Old Bronson Meydi

Had you heard of Bronson Meydi before this week? I hadn't, but I sure as hell have now. From Lakey Peak, Bronson is an Indonesian/Australian with a ridiculous amount of talent and a solid future ahead of him by the looks of his tuberiding and aerial abilities.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
