Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was June 19 2020

1. Laura Macaulay at the Right, on the 7.30 Report

West Australia's Laura Macaulay (daughter of Dave, sister of Bronte) became the first woman to surf one of the most notorious waves we have – The Right – late last year.

This week, her story was told on ABC's 7.30 Report – which was then re-reported all over the mainstream news internet. Props to Laura and props to the ABC for putting a spotlight on the feat, it's a nice piece, and deserves a viewing from the rest of us. (And you can read the full story at the ABC over here.)

2. Vicco's Concrete Point is Open Again

There hasn't been a lot of "Re-opening" stories to highlight in surfing like the rest of Aus. For the most part the beaches remained open, so apart from the rule changes of out-of-towners being able to surf again, not a lot has changed as restrictions have been easing. But one place that did shut was Australia's only open-to-the-public wave pool, at Tullamarine in Melbourne. Still in their first few months of operation, the pool had to be closed, like every other public pool in the country, when COVID-19 lock downs took hold, but as of today it's back open. They'll also be dropping two new types of sessions – one called Cruiser, which is a laidback longboard style wave, and in bigger and better news, they've made a new variation of their "Beast Mode" barrelling little slab which they'll be capping surfer numbers for at 12, rather than the usual 18.

In correlation with their re-opening, they dropped this drone clip of Concrete Point.

3. Dakoda Walters Is One of the Best Young Surfers in the Country

Angourie supergrom turned lanky high performance teen, Dakoda Walters has been surfing his head off around home over the course of the last few months. Apparently these clips were meant to be a part of the Snapt 4 movie, but with the movie's release date pushed back, he's chucked them here instead. We'll take it. Gee, there's worse places you could have had to spend lockdown, hey.

4. Morgan Cibilic Should Be on the CT Right Now

Remember when Morgan Cibilic popped out of seemingly nowhere and qualified for the Championship Tour? That was sick. Poor fella has had his rookie season delayed though. If you were wondering how he might have surfed through the CTs, you can give this vid a squiz of him detonating relatively average waves over five days in May on a Will Webber Wundabat. The power! It’s just so Aussie looking, isn’t it?

5. Check Out Lauren L Hill's New Book, She Surf

Do you know Lauren L Hill? She's a wonderful writer whose essays you might have read in Surfing World and other places, often covering stuff that shamefully too often gets overlooked in surf culture and media. This week she's released a new book – a reflection on what it means to be a female surfer and a celebration of the diverse and engaged community women surfers all over the planet. It looks really bloody nice.

You can find the book via Euro book publisher Gestalten – and probably in a heap of book shops around the joint too.

Sidenote: Lauren also has an excellent podcast she does with partner Dave Rastovich. Here's a good episode of that with our guy Sean Doherty.

6. A Full Surf Vid That Stars Chippa Wilson Et Al

A couple of weeks ago, Inherent Bummer released a surf video. Inherent Bummer is the newish surf brand slash media thingy from that Surfing editor who started What Youth, Travis Ferré. The video was locked, but now it’s free to place on any site ya want, like Coastalwatch. The movie is 27 minutes and features, oh gee... it features a lot of very good people. Chippa Wilson, Steph Gilmore, Craig Anderson, Isabella Nichols, Ryan Callinan, Kehu Butler, Filipe Toledo, Lee Wilson, Jay Davies, Thom Pringle and heaps more.

Some of those heaps more are Julian Wilson, Kai Lenny, Dion Agius, Kyuss King, Mitch Coleborn, Matt Meola, Italo Ferreira, Oscar Langburne, Liam O’Brien, Creed McTaggart, Jack Freestone, Josh Stokes and Shaun Manners… and heaps more that that too. That's more interesting and big name surfers than I’ve had cold dinners (surprisingly a lot).

7. Absolutely Ridiculous Kanduis

Nic Von Rupp is out here recycling content from 2017, and we're out here reposting it. Some surf is just that good I suppose. It's so good that he's titled the video, "KANDUI THE BEST WAVE IN THE WORLD?" Which... yeah I dunno 'bout that one.

8. Bethany Hamilton and Lakey Peterson in Lights

Aaron Lieber, the director behind Bethany Hamilton’s huge doc Unstoppable, brings us this Stab shoot-looking piece of video surf art of Bethany and Lakey surfing Pasta Point in the Maldives. Some spectacular colours getting thrown around here.

9. Mickey Smith's Kinda Sorta Sequel to Dark Side of the Lens

To do this film justice, you really need to put your phone down, put this on a bigger device and make sure it’s full screen. An Irish surf film lament on Cornish big wave surfer Tom Lowe. This comes from filmmaker photographer Mickey Smith, whose short film Dark Side of the Lens had some people calling it the best surf clip ever made.

10. Kanoa Igarashi Watches Surf Movies for Vanity Fair

These clips have become their own genre of internet content – an expert in a field looks at Hollywood versions of what they do, and breaks it down for the audience. Here's Vanity Fair's version with Japanese/American star Kanoa Igarashi checking out Blue Crush, the Point Break reboot and Surf's Up. His enthusiasm and charisma is really well portrayed, and the punters in the Vanity Fair YouTube comments are loving him.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
