Ten Things from Surfing & the Internet on the Week That Was August 21 2020

1. Settle Down, Crosby Colapinto in Mexico

A fair banger of a clip of rising Californian star Crosby Colapinto getitng solid pits in Mexico. Putting this first on the This Week In Surfing list because I reckon Crosby Colapinto is very good and I want to see more of him.

It's funny how when you click on a Mexican surf clip you don't know if you're going to get Backdoor Pipe looking bombs or Arugam Bay gentle point rollers. This one the former.

2. Rivals Episode 2 – The Josh Kerr Episode

I don't know Josh Kerr, but one time I was reporting on the ground from the Billabong Pro Teahupo'o, and I had to paddle all the way in. It takes ages, and after a long day sitting on a surfboard in the channel in the sun, it's a shitty paddle. Kerrsy flew past on a jet-ski. He'd just lost his heat and was heading back in to pack up his stuff and fly the hell back home. Unprompted he whipped around and picked me up to give me a lift in. Thanks, Kerrsy.

Unrelated to all that, here's his episode for the very good new show Rivals.

3. Did You Hear About Rabbit?

World Champ, pro surfing pioneer and all 'round legend of the sport and culture, Wayne Rabbit Bartholomew announced this week that he'll be running in the next Queensland State Election for the lower house, in the seat of Burleigh, as a candidate for Labor.

Nick Carroll got him on the phone to talk about it all, it's a good read.

You can have whatever take you want regarding the politics of this, but you have to marvel at what an incredible life story Rabbit has, and how much the life of a hot Gold coast surfer from the Gold Coast in the early 70s has evolved to today. Extraordinary.

4. Ours Being Ours This Winter

Tim Bonython, the ultimate camera wielding swell chaser, has been in his absolute element this winter. These are his highlights from Sunday and Monday August 11 12 Aug.  Surfing starts at 2.46.

5. Women Going Jaws

Kings of YouTube surf content, Red Bull have launched a new series called No Small Feat – it's an all-female big wave series following Emi Erickson and Izzi Gomez in the days leading to the 2019 Jaws contest. It's a little bit funny seeing this beautiful high-end production where the main character works at a shop called "Celestial Natural Foods", is produced by an energy drink.

6. Speaking of Big Waves

Here’s what the WSL says were the "gnarliest big wave rides of the year", only they said it in all caps and with three (3) exclamation marks.

7. Lakey Peterson Free-Surf Edit

Californian World No.3 Lakey Peterson is married to a dude from Victoria, so she's a borderline local these days and spent a bunch of time around Torquay this year, where this freesurf edit was filmed. Her grandfather invented the McMuffin.

8. What About This Board That Got Lost...

...and then turned up two years later a long way way away. The board was lost at Waimea and turned up in the Phillipines.

Says the board's former owner, Doug Falter:

"I’ve heard crazy stories about boards washing up on Kauai. I’ve heard stories about fishermen finding dudes’ boards like four years later. But that didn’t happen with my board – until, fast-forward to a week ago, and some guy has my board in the Philippines."

It's a pretty amazing story, and you should read it.

9. Nic Von Rupp and an Awesome Balinese Right

These Nic Von Rupp clips could be anything, but I will never not be amazed by the choices made for the intro. Every. Single. Time.

10. Mason and Coco Ho at the Palm Springs Pool

The anything goes, chaotic energy of this wave pool, meeting the anything goes, chaotic energy of Mason Ho is a little too much for my brain right now. He's getting barrelled fins first, spinning through the exits for goodness sake. He's skating down broken water slides! He's wall-riding the fence... I'm gonna have a lie down.

And that was this week in surfing. Have a good weekend everyone.
