School holidays? No problem! Five spots you can score a wave with the tykes in tow…

Autumn is the best time to pack up the kids and head bush. By bush we mean out of the city or your local with a tent or caravan and the bare minimum for a weekend of good old fashion fun. It's the best time of year for offshore pumping waves everywhere and the school holidays in most states start next week too. Here are some top spots to help you out and get you out of the house while the waves are great and the kids want adventure.

TREACHERY, NSW

The New South Wales mid north coast has got it going on, and there ain’t nowhere cuter than that pert little beachside campground at Treachery, just outta Seal Rocks. Treachery goes off in a south or east swell, loves a northerly breeze and can even kinda handle an arvo nor’easterly gust. The kids’ll froth on that tribal summertime caravan park vibe, and most likely join forces with other roving packs of BMX-riding shortarses and go to war with each other.

LOCATION: Treachery is located just outside of Seal Rocks, 280km north of Sydney. Access is via the Pacific Highway and the Lakes Way.

CAMP at Treachery Campground, or book a cabin if ya feelin’ fancy.

THE BAWLEY COAST, NSW

The little stretch of coast surrounding Bawley Point on the New South Wales south coast is a gem, and well worth a summertime jaunt. The town’s eponymous point break, plus a couple other little reefs, pick up every lick of south swell, plus you’ll have the pick of a bunch of empty beachies. Stay at the Racecourse Beach Holiday Park, where the massive inflatable trampoline, turquoise swimming pool and play equipment will keep the brats entertained as long as you need.

LOCATION: Bawley Point is located 250km south of Sydney, access is via the Princes Highway and the drive takes between three and four hours.

CAMPING is available within the Murramarang National Park at Pretty Beach, Depot Beach and Pebbly Beach campgrounds, as well as at the Racecourse Beach Holiday Park.

AGNES WATERS, QLD

Beat the crowds on the Goldie and Sunshine Coast and head north! Agnes Waters is a fair hike northbound, but the pace is fine tuned to soothe your frazzled nerves. The southern tip of the world’s biggest and best coral reef blocks a lot of long range groundswell from getting in here, but the righthander at Agnes Waters offers a novelty wave that’s heaps of fun on a fish or summer shape, and the kids can grovel in the beachey ‘til their puny arms don’t spin no more.

LOCATION: Agnes Waters is located 487km north of Brisbane, access is via the Bruce Highway and the drive will take around six hours.

CAMPING is available at the Captain Cook Caravan Park, The Reef Holiday Park and the Agnes Waters Beach Holiday Park.

PHILLIP ISLAND, VIC

Melbourne’s own island paradise, Phillip Island is just 140km from town and a thousand miles from care. Southern swell is a year-round proposition down here, although water temps remain chilly right through summer. The best part of being on an island is it’s always offshore somewhere! So check the wind and pick your peak…

LOCATION: Phillip Island’s located 140km south of Melbourne, access is via the Bass Highway.

CAMPING is available at Cowes Caravan Park, Phillip Island Adventure Resort and YMCA Phillip Island.

BYRON BAY, NSW

What the Goldie just over the border lacks in subtlety, the bay make up for in cheesy good vibrations. Everyone from your hippy aunty to your suddenly wild partyin’, high school graduatin’ cousin got a soft spot for the bay. Best part is you can still score a decent wave up here in most conditions, the water’s warm year round and you can push the little’uns into a few peelers at The Pass with little risk other than the odd errant log courtesy of the euro-kook-rent-a-mal-brigade.

LOCATION: 775km north of Sydney and 65km short of the Queensland border. The Bay’s on the holiday radar for everyone between Sydney and Brissy and even further afield.

CAMPING: Don’t even try camping within city limits, unless you like being slapped with move along orders and fines, that is. Campgrounds are located outside of town at Clarkes Beach, Broken Head and Brunswick Heads.
