The Tahitian comedown to perfection

29 Aug 2011 0 Share

The Billabong Tahiti Pro was back in the water today as a decrease in swell saw yesterday’s mind-blowing monsters reduced to mere 8-10 foot perfection. But hey, there are still some solid drainers for the taking. Our boat parks up just in time to see Wilko dropping into a beast to lock in a 10 pointer and dispense with Jadson Andre.

The weather has come good again and the channel once again resembles a scene from water world. A flotilla of spectators aboard canoes, surfboards and boogie-boards fill the gaps between the boats as the water patrol navigate their way through the zoo of people.

Kelly’s heat comes up. Slater in 8-10 Choaps perfection - now we’re in for a show. Every set that comes through finds Slater in the spot. There is something about watching him surf live that just make you stop. You don’t talk, you just watch. It’s like he knows exactly what every drop of water is doing.

Brett Simpson continues the sizzling form that saw him take down Damien Hobgood and Parko earlier in the contest. Ripping!

As the morning progresses, the swell gets less consistent and the wind spins cross-shore. I head to the media room to log some footage. As I arrive the tens start rolling through. First Owen, then Flores pulls out back-to-back double-digits to take down Bourez who bowed out of the event with a heat score of 18.13.

Jeremy is only the third surfer to score two perfect rides in a heat, though due to changes in ASP judging criteria, he’s still behind Shane Beschen’s record of three perfect tens at Kirra in 1996 when three waves were judged.

Looks like tomorrow is going to be the last day of competition with a slight drop in swell but perfect conditions. Bring it on…
