Report by Alex Pundyk at Aganoa Lodge Samoa
October in Samoa is a beautiful month especially if you're a surfer.
Being an Aussie, spring usually spells the end of the winter swells, offshore winds and Indo trips. However, fortunately I was an Aussie in Samoa experiencing the consistent southwest swells that were lightly feathered by offshore winds for pretty much the duration of October.
As one swell would taper off into a playful 2-3 feet, the next swell could be seen looming in the forecast from the SouthWest at 4-6 feet. The predominent winds were on average 15 knots from the East which wrap into the bay here at Aganoa Lodge and groom the waves out the front into a surfers playground. The typical view from our bar area showed a throaty Aganoa right spitting at times while Keith's left was delivering a barrel section of peeling perfection.
On occasion a rainy front would come through from the SouthEast with onshore winds at Aganoa Lodge which meant it was time for a road trip around the coast where a long left hand point and a fun A-frame were located and are sheltered from these winds. While we rarely encounter any other surfers at these spots, some people opt for the onshore conditions at Aganoa as this produces some seriously rippable waves.
Aganoa Lodge was a temporary home to surfers, bodyboarders, SUPs, mals, photographers, couples and families in the month of October. Our rolling easy left hander, "little lefts", saw some long rides all the way up to our white sand beach in the corner at the same time as someone could be sitting comfortably in the bowl at Aganoa right. With the amount of waves and lack of crowds we were constantly surfed out.
Thanks to everyone who came to share the fun at Aganoa Lodge Samoa in what was a great month of surfing.
