COASTALWATCH | DESTINATION NSW

Well didn't this just sneak up on us like cat to a pigeon. One moment you're looking up at your calendar on the wall and thinking you should probably get around to getting a 2018 version of one of these things, and then the next moment it's the opening weekend of the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro, ONLY THE BIGGEST FREAKING SURFING EVENT IN SYDNEY ALL YEAR! Should really have gotten a calendar.

At the crux of the event are the men's and women's QS6000 events, which is always a pivotal block for any surfer building a qualification year. But there is so much more going on around Manly, and so much more meaning to the event than that.

When you have a big surfing event in Manly, it's impossible to avoid the rich history that Manly holds in Australian surfing. From Phylis O'Donnell and Midget Farrely winning the 1964 World Titles, to the fabled Coca Cola Surfabout events starring Larry Blair and the effervescent Wayne Lynch, and if you drive up the hill you'll put yourself right in the heart of the area that created some of the most significant surfboard design evolutions in surfing history. Coud go on, and on, and on... but we won't. Instead we'll just reiterate that when a big surfing event goes down at Manly, it's special. So it's a bloody ripper thing that the Vissla Sydney Surf Pro is underway!

While there's stuff to explore all over the foreshore all week, includine a heap of exhibitions, the action in the water begins with the Men's and Women's Junior WSL QS1000 (called the Keye Sun Zinke Sydney Pro Junior).

The Men's and Women's QS6000's early rounds get underway on Monday Fabruary 26 and runs all week, with the big action and trophies finishing up on the following Sunday March 4. Should be bonza!

Click on over here for the full schedule so you don't miss any of the cool stuff going down in Manly over the next week.
