Rob Bain Returns to G-Land to Reflect on the 1994 Tsunami

On June 3 1994 in the middle of the night, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred deep in the ocean floor of the Java Trench,
sending a powerful tsunami shoreward, striking violently into the Indonesian coastline and killing 280 people. Amongst those sleeping in the region when the tsunami hit were Rob Bain and the Hot Tuna surf team – including Richard Dog Marsh, Monty Webber and Shane Herring – staying in huts at a G-Land surf camp. They were lucky to escape the event alive.

This year marked the 25th anniversary of the tragic event. Bainy travelled back to G-Land with his son to attend a ceremony paying respects to those who lost their lives.

"To be able to go back this year and share this experience with survivors,  my son, and to ride barrels together, was powerful," says Bainy.

It's a lovely video, and like anything that features the thoughtul and awesome Rob Bain, well worth your time.
