Video: Storm Hits Shippies

The swell actually lasted over a one week period with a large storm generating in the southern ocean. It started with harsh onshore winds and the swell growing to eight to ten metres on the west coast. Around at Shippies it equated to about 20 foot and there were some solid mutants. Again, this swell came with average winds so goop, wobbles and steps in the wave were everywhere.

That morning I had a feeling the swell was going to be epic so I booked it home and got down. It was surreal from the rocks, the amount of swell and watching these huge mutant barrels coming through was just amazing. It was probably my shortest surf out there only getting two waves and snapping my tow board off the first ledge. I was seriously worried about where I had fallen and was amazed to not get critically injured or re-break my back. That night we all had heaps of fun and woke up the next morning to perfect ten to 12 foot pits. We all thought we were going to be in for a perfect paddle day and I got a few good paddle waves but some of the sets were still just unpaddleable. The different moods at Shippies is just crazy – some days it's just the perfect mellow stand up barrel and other days it's so hectic and hard to ride with so much water moving. I teamed up with Simon Treweek to capture some footage for everyone along with the POV vision.

It was perfect – warm and sunny with everyone was getting shacked all day.
